Tour Overview
In the early morning of February 2, 1953, the Randstad escaped a catastrophe. The dike in the Hollandsche IJssel breaks through and water flows into the Randstad unimpeded. Thanks to the cool action of citizens, emergency services, municipal authorities and the skipper of the barge "Two brothers", the gap is closed and 3.5 million people can continue to sleep peacefully and wake up peacefully on Sunday morning.
During the day, they become aware of the Disaster that has unfolded in the Delta, if they are allowed to listen to the radio on Sunday, of course, and in fact is still going on. This cycling tour leads you along the first Deltawerk, the storm surge barrier in the Hollandse IJssel, and a few points where the dikes have breached.
You will also pass places where the extraction of fossil fuels has also caused us problems in the past. Peat extraction in this area has lowered the land many meters and we are still dealing with the consequences.
The tour starts and ends at a bicycle repair shop. By chance? A bit because this mall has good parking and is close to the Algera bridge and the storm surge barrier. You can of course take some groceries with you on the way home.
The trip is 42 kilometers but the beautiful Dutch city of Gouda is halfway up, so here you can take a nice break at the market, with a view of the monumental town hall, at one of the many cafes and restaurants. Important information in advance:
