Over a stretch of around five kilometres or 3 miles, the Danube has cut its way through the Limestone cliffs going up to 70-metres above water level. Sailing through it by excursion boat from Kelheim is a breathtaking experience. The Weltenburg Abbey and its brewery are situated in the midst of this natural spectacle.Weltenburg Abbey was founded by the Iro-Scottish itinerant monks Eustasius and Agilus of Luxeuil around the year 600, making it the oldest monastic settlement in Bavaria. Around the year 800, the abbey adopted the rules of St. Benedict. Seven Benedictine monks still live in Weltenburg Abbey today. Thomas Maria Freihart has been the abbot of the monastery since 1998. Among other things, the monks work as chaplains and look after guests at the St. Georg meeting place.Brewing activities started around 1050 AD and can still be enjoyed during a tour of the complex. You can enjoy this holy beer in one of the most beautiful beer gardens in Bavaria situated in the baroque monastery grounds. Friendly waiters in stylish traditional costumes serve the famous beer at the wooden tables under the mighty chestnut trees.
