Passau to Kelheim

Bavarian Danube:
Enjoy sailing the Bavarian Danube through Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate from Kelheim at the entrance of the Main Danube Canal to Passau at the Austrian border or the other way around. An experience with a great variety of land- and cityscapes.

Landscape highlights and city higlights:
Weltenburg Gorge, Bavarian Jura, Bavarian Forest and the Gäuboden, Regensburg, Straubing, Deggendorf, Vilshofen and Passau.

Bavarian Jura:
Near Kelheim, the Danube flows through the Weltenburg Gorge, before it becomes a commercial waterway, below stream of Kelheim. Here it is joined by the River Altmühl in use as the last part of the Main-Danube-Canal. The Danube continues its way through the southeastern foothills of the Bavarian Jura with its bizarre limestone rock formations, such as the Devil's Rock at Saal an der Donau.

Danube's northernmost point:
The Danube then meanders in a NNW direction past beautiful countryside and quaint villages. At Mariaort and Regensburg Prüfening it is joined by the River Naab. The Danube reaches its northernmost point in its entire journey from the Black Forest to the Black Sea.

Europe Canal:
Regensburg can be reached by commercial ship via the Europe Canal bypassing the 12th century stone bridge linking the ancient city of Regensburg with its bridgehead Stadtamhof, both listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A must stop for at least a day.

From Regensburg the Danube meanders in a southwesterly direction towards Austria. First it flows past the city's outskirts and its port Danube meanders through the Bavarian plains along the Bavarian forest towards Passau.
