Skeppsholmen & Kastellholmen — Audio Tour

A former military island that couldn't quite decide what it wanted to be.

Let's start with an introduction.

You're standing at the edge of central Stockholm, about to cross onto an island that spent three hundred years as one of Sweden's most heavily guarded military secrets—and is now entirely open to the public, home to art museums, a youth hostel, a hotel, and what may be the best view in the city.

That's quite a career change.

Skeppsholmen — Ship's Island — has been a royal shipyard, a naval headquarters, a WWII command bunker, a torpedo factory, an art school, and a playground for Swedish royalty who wanted somewhere to go skating. The building that once stored mines is now a restaurant. The old prison is a museum annex. The sailors left in 1969. The artists moved in almost immediately.

We'll take it stop by stop. Let's begin.
