Now cross the Skeppsholm bridge to reach Skeppsholmen were the prior Swedish naval base was locatedThe Skeppsholms Bridge connects Stockholm's Blasieholmen peninsula on Norrmalm with Skeppsholmen. The Admiralty funded the construction of the first bridge on the site, which was completed between 1638 and 1640. Built on stilts, this wooden bridge featured a drawbridge. In 1765, a new drawbridge was added to the Skeppsholm Bridge. In 1789, they removed the drawbridge and replaced it with a flap in the northern section of the bridge. Galarian squadrons implemented a lock fee for crossing the bridge, which he paid into his coffers to restore .The bridge, also known as Holmbridge, was destroyed by fire in 1822. Following the fire, a temporary floating bridge was installed. The state paid for the current structure to replace the temporary one, which stood until 1861.In 1935, the government determined that the Skeppsholm Bridge, along with other structures on Blasieholmen and Kastellholmen, should be designated as a state building monument.Reaching Skeppsholmen island and KastellholmenThese two archipelago islands in the heart of metropolitan Stockholm have almost miraculously avoided exploitation. Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen are two green, leafy islands in the midst of a bustling city of millions.Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen were once restricted and strongly guarded worlds full of military secrets, but they are now open to everyone wishing for a respite from the hectic city life. The islands of Stockholm's innermost archipelago, Nationalstadsparken, are steeped in history and provide a wealth of natural and cultural attractions. This location houses cultural institutions such as the Modern Museum, the Architecture and Design Centre, the East Asian Museum, and the Royal Academy of Arts. However, Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen are appealing to more than just established organisations and tourist attractions. Here, one can find numerous unique buildings and environments.Reaching the islandThe islands were mentioned as early as the middle ages The term Skeppsholmen emerges for the first time in the middle of the 17th century, when the navy relocated its shipyards and workshops to the island. For over three hundred years, the navy has dominated life and development on the island. Sweden's first naval force was formed when Gustav Vasa purchased and equipped old Hanseatic ships from Lübeck, which was small enough to be anchored at the pier beneath Stockholm's castle. The islands' earliest history is unknown. However, King Magnus Birgersson gave the islands to Klara monastery in the 13th century. The names Vångsön and Northolmen may suggest how they were used by their original inhabitants. They ploughed or harrowed their fields here, as well as fished for herring. The city lacked suitable arable land around the castle of Tre Kronor (located where the Royal Palace is today). The area on the big island opposite the castle eventually became a green and beautiful area for the royal household, and from Gustav Vasa's sons onwards, the island was known as Lustholmen.Parts of Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen have been open to the public since 1749, during peacetime. The naval station was a miniature society with a school, trade stalls, cafes, and taverns. The station also served as its parish, complete with a vicar and vicarage. The Exercise House hosted Sunday balls, attracting plenty of dancing cavaliers! With the openness also came rules of order, such as not singing after eleven o'clock at night. The naval fleet was established on Skeppsholmen in the 17th century under the rule of Gustav Vasa.As the naval fleet expanded, it was transferred to the current Blasieholmen (where the Grand Hotel and National Museum are located today); however, Queen Kristina in the 1600s thought her view was unsatisfactory from the castle and decided in 1634 that the naval shipyard should be relocated back to Skeppsholmen. During her visit to the island after the relocation, Queen Kristina crossed the bridge to inspect the new shipyard. The bridge was not as sturdy as it is today, and a sudden slip sent the queen plunging into the water. Some of the residences built in the middle of the 17th century are still standing today, such as the Admiralty House and the ropes course, which is now home to the East Asia Museum.THE MOVE TO KARLSKRONALater Karl XI decided to base the navy in Karlskrona, following the 1679 peace treaty with Denmark. And during this time, Skeppsholmen's buildings served many civilian purposes. Skeppsholmen was repurposed as a naval base in 1715 to protect Stockholm from the Russians, who had defeated the Swedish army at the Battle of Poltava in 1709. The construction of the North and South foundation houses took place in a galley yard on the island's north side.PART OF THE NATIONAL CITY PARKToday, the islets are part of the National City Park. Established in 1995, it stands as the world's first of its kind. The park spans from Ulriksdal and Haga Castle to Djurgården, Skepps- and Kastellholmen.
