Tour Overview

Take a step through time and discover the history of Roman Britain, taking you through the valleys and besides the lakes, on towards Penrith and the North of the country.

Journey beside Hadrian’s Wall, almost 80 miles long and the northern boundary of the mighty Roman Empire for around 3 Centuries. The wall was built by a force of 15,000 men over a 7-year period and comprises of forts, Mile Castles and every third of a mile a Turret, stretching from the North Sea to the Irish Sea. Originally it stood 3m wide and 5/6m high and today much of the ruins still stand at 1 to 2m high.

Explore the Roman Army Museum, where you'll be immersed into life as a Roman Soldier. Sit back and relax with their award-winning film, which illustrates the military and civil engineering accomplishments of the Romans in Britain. Take a pause from Roman life and have a bit to eat in the museum's cafe, taking in the history before the next adventure continues.

After lunch, we make our way to Vindolanda, a working archaeological dig site to the south of Hadrian’s Wall. Treasures are unvcovered every year here by volunteer excavators, from the 9 forts built over the 400 years of the Roman occupancy. Wander through the remains, appreciating the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Journey back to the Lake District through the rugged landscape of Northumberland. A dramatic mix of rugged, sparsely populated western hills and a scenic, agricultural eastern coastal plain.
