About CycleStory

The self-guided cycle or walking tour is packed with unexpected stops and people with stories waiting to be told. All you need is a bike and your phone!

Ride, stop, read and listen. Who knew about the work done on the Hill Road by the WW1 tunnellers who had previously helped build a city linking underground cellars in French towns? Or when machines went back to horsepower in Wellington transport history? Written by Kāpiti storyteller Keryn Mells, the stories can be read or listened to, with audio recorded by Paekākāriki local – writer and broadcaster Mark Amery. Each story is accompanied by photos and links to dig a little deeper.

There is no doubt that the best stories in Paekākāriki are about its people; and they are a focus of our tour. Through quirky stories and unique historical and contemporary sites you can learn about the writers, poets, dancers, publicans, protesters, road builders, travellers and soldiers of the town.

The inaugural CycleStory route which runs down the spine of the Kāpiti Coast will be available on the app, for those that want a longer ride. CycleStory is a side hustle of Bookmark Kāpiti - a biennial book festival supported by the Kāpiti Coast District Council.
