PILOT DARRELL SQUARE

NEXT LEFT & FIRST RIGHTDIASPORA TRAILPILOT JAMES ā€˜JEMMY’ DARRELL SQUAREIn May 1795, James Darrell piloted Admiral George Murray’s ship, the 74-gun HMS Resolute, into Murray’s Anchorage on the North Shore near Tobacco Bay, St. George’s Parish. The Admiral was so impressed with Mr. Darrell’s skills that he recommended that Mr. Darrell be granted his freedom. Pilot Darrell was also known for his bravery. ā€œI do hereby declare the said Jemmy Darrell to be exonerated and released from all manner of Slavery or Servitude whatsoever, and I do earnestly request all Persons to treat him, as a man actually and bona fide Freedman.( By Governor James Crawford March 1, 1796.)Shortly after being freed, he purchased a house in St. George’s on what is now Pilot Darrell’s Square. It was restored in 1992 by his great, great, great grandson Romano Ramirez who lives there. Darrell was made a King’s Pilot on May 2, 1796. King's Pilots were premier pilots whose main responsibility was to pilot British Naval ships through the Bermuda reefs. History tells that Pilot Darrell was the first black man to own a home in Bermuda. This modest house was bought and owned by Mr. Darrell in the 18th century. Mr. Darrell was a slave who was ā€œownedā€ by Captain Francis Darrell of St. George’s Parish. Historians report that he was quite a valuable slave, worth 100 British pounds. Mr. Darrell's experiences as a free man, were not much different than during enslavement due to legislation introduced to limit the rights of freed slaves. He consistently fought these regulations which sought to limit his hard-earned rights. He wrote petitions asking for better pay for pilots, as well as for the legal right for blacks to will their property to their wives, children or relatives. He died at the age of 66 on April 12, 1815. On April 12, 2007, Premier Dr. Ewart Brown presided over a ceremony in the graveyard for slaves and free blacks at St. Peter’s Church in St. George's on the 192nd anniversary of Pilot Darrell’s death. In 2008, the Bermuda Archives held an exhibition, A Very Manifest Alteration, which unveiled the life, and time of Pilot James Darrell 1793-1816 . In honour of Pilot James Darrell, in 2009, a reunion of his descendants was held. Some of the descendants live in Australia, Bermuda and New Zealand. Head down to the BLUE ARROW SIGN on the wall on to Queen Street for the next left and right turn. James "Jemmy" Darrell, a free black slave was buried on the western segregated area for blacks by a dividing wall of St. Peter's Church graveyard that's opposite to his home.

PETER'S CHURCH & WHITE HALL OPPOSITE THE CHURCH.Entry free of charge !!!St. Peter’s Church / Their Majesties Chapel located in the historic town of St. George's.St. Peter’s Church is held amongst history chronicles to be the oldest, constantly used Anglican Church in the western hemisphere. The current church was not the first house of worship on the site. It replaced a storm demolished structure in 1612 which was constructed from wooden posts and a roof of palmetto leaves. Inside, visitors marvel to see the altar from the original structure that was built in 1615 under the supervision of Richard Moore, Bermuda’s first Governor. This is the oldest piece of woodwork in Bermuda. Treasures in the vestry include a very fine collection of communion silver from the 1600's.The oldest part of the church is the area around the triple-tier pulpit. When you enter the architecture structure, the decor of this church gives you a reflection back in the 1600's.The Bermuda Parliament first met at the St. Peter’s Church in 1620, thus establishing the assembly as the 3rd oldest Parliament in the world. Outside in the church yard, there are two graveyards: one toward a walled area to the west of the church. This (NEW CUT OUT PATH) is for burial of the black enslaves and reserved eastward was for whites. In 1698, St. Georges had a population of one-third blacks, who were mostly brought in from Africa as slaves. St. Peter’s Church remains an important site on the African Bermudian Diaspora Heritage Trail of Bermuda which traces the legacy of slavery in Bermuda. In 1713, St. Peter’s Church was expanded. The tower and wings were added in the 19th century. Regular service is still held on Sunday mornings promptly at 11am. 400 years after the General Assembly first met in St. George’s in 1620, the Convening of Parliament and Throne Speech led by the now leader Premier David Burt of the Bermuda Government returned to the east end of the island to mark the 400th anniversary. FEATHERBED ALLEY

DIASPORA TRAILMITCHELL HOUSE ON FEATHERBED ALLEYMitchell House was named after Mr. Walter Mitchell, an architect, who had the home built in 1720. It’s been told that Featherbed Alley was named as such following the actions of a wife’s long suffering agony and annoyance over her husband’s excessive alcoholic binges. On one of his particular disorderly bouts, she dumped their featherbed mattress out of the upper window of Mitchell House to the street below. When her liquored up hubby returned home, sleeping under the stars on the featherbed mattress seemed a splendid option as that’s what he did. At this building is a barred window of the Mitchell House . A Methodist Preacher John Stephenson was imprisoned as he lacked authority and a permit to preach. He is noted to be the first Methodist minister to have a permanent posting in Bermuda. His spreading of the message of Methodism to blacks, whites, helped slaves and freed slaves was thought to be a threat. From that window with bars, he continued to preach while imprisoned. Government passed a law to silence him regardless of its location.

DIASPORA TRAILTHE UNFINISHED CHURCH on Duke of Kent Street, continue up the hill to Church Folly Lane, you will find it toward the right.Just as the name suggests, this Gothic structure is an unfinished church designed by William Hay, an architect of Scottish descent. Construction of The Unfinished Church began in 1870 to replace St. Peter’s Church, which was very badly damaged in a storm. The completion of The Unfinished Church was hindered by Parishioners disagreements over fund allocations and the work came to a halt in 1899. A tornado demolished the roof in 1925.There is no cost to visit this grey stoned majestic landmark. It’s an edifice of archways in the Town of St. George's and is a very popular location for weddings, photo ops, special event backdrops, curious visitors and the consuming photographer. Continue up Government Hill Road to Fort William and the GUNPOWDER PLOT TRAIL.

GUNPOWDER PLOT TRAIL TO TOBACCO BAY

DIASPORA TRAILGUNPOWDER PLOT TRAIL TO TOBACCO BAYThe parking lot to the right is Fort William. The tunnels within the Fort lead down to Convict Bay, which can be seen later in the tour located in the wall across from the entrance to the East End Mini Yacht Club. This trail now divides the fair ways of the New Golf Course. From this point after America reimposed the trade embargo on Bermuda. Bermuda played a role by helping George Washington during the American Revolutionary War. The war was used to gain independence from the British who ruled Bermuda, it's amazing. It is a classic story with intriguing adventures, action, and 100 barrels of gunpowder lead through this trail. Rewind to the summer of 1775, the American colonies are in revolt with Bermuda's loyalties are divided. While much of the island's populace remains loyal to the English Crown, there are many who sympathize with the America Continental Congress fighting for independence including one of Bermuda’s most powerful merchants Colonel Henry Tucker, a resident of the town of St.George’s. Tucker House where Henry Tucker resided, is now a museum. PLOTTING IN THE COLONIES OF BERMUDA Colonel Tucker is a born bred Bermudian. Tucker is a man of action, not content to sit idly by in these fractious times. He travels to Philadelphia to attempt to re-open trade routes with the colonies. Benjamin Franklin had other ideas. He wants gunpowder and he has information that more than 100 barrels of gunpowder is sitting in a lightly guarded magazine in St. George’s, near the present-day Fort William.AUGUST 15th. UNDER THE COVER OF DARKNESS, Night falls on St. George’s. Col. Tucker’s small party of trusted ā€œBermudiansā€ (Brits) and incognito American sailors gather in a cobblestone alley. Few words are spoken as the band heads to the magazine, where the barrels of precious gunpowder are stored. The plotters are in luck; just one unarmed sentry guards the magazine, and he is easily overcome. The barrels are rolled down through this trail to a locally made cedar skiffs (boats), which transport the cargo to the waiting American ships in our northern reefs. Early the next morning of August 16th, the plot is discovered and a custom-built ship from St. George’s was sent to chase down the Lady Catherine and the Packet. It was too late. The cargo is delivered to Charleston and Philadelphia, providing the patriots with much-needed firepower in their fight against the Red Coats (British). And now a special part of the St. George's UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Challenge yourself from snorkeling to rock climbing and cliff jumping at TOBACCO BAY BEACH - the #1 beach in ST GEORGE’S, with free WI-FI and a picturesque stop for a photo op. History states the beach was named because tobacco was found growing here many years back. Others say tobacco was shipped from the bay area to James Town. However the history goes, the beach is one of our all-time favorites for snorkeling adventures, where you will see many reef formations, colourful fish and even turtles or lobsters, just a few feet under the warmer waters. It’s a fascinating view of the marine life along with beautiful clusters of coral. Tobacco Bay is ideal for children as it is quite shallow. This is not a pink sandy beach like those found on the southern side of the island. The sand here is normally pale yellow in color. When there’s a south wind, you will find some of the most sheltered spots in the bay, where you will find cozy romantic caves.Tobacco Bay Beach Bermuda has columns of limestone rocks 15’ft to 25' ft high that separates the bay from the open ocean. Across the way the rocks depth averages about 10 feet. If you swim off the rocks, you can find your way into the ocean. Some tourist challenge themselves by having fun cliff jumping off the rocks. The view from the top of rocks is simply breathtaking!FROM TOBACCO BAY TO ST. Additionally, there’s information on the development of Bermuda’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. From Fort St. Catherine’s carpark; take spectacular selfies or photo ops with some of the colourful homes in the background. This is a great landmark to see cruise ships navigate through the narrow northern channel into St. George’s and Hamilton Harbour, the Oil Docks and Old Slaughter House to the left of the Shore Line or the North Rock is on the Horizon due North at 11:00. Used during WORLD WAR TWO, see the navigational beacon from this point, North Rock is located in the northern waters of Bermuda were local fishermen thrive for the days catch. It’s about a 7-mile boat ride from the east end and the area around the North Rock beacon has been a ship wreck graveyard for many ships. Look down on Achilles Bay, a secluded cove so named as it's like the shape of a heel. Here visitors can enjoy another choice for snorkeling and swimming. On the sandy stretch at the water’s edge aligned, to the fort’s south side is St. Catherine’s Beach. Admire the view! The water area beyond the beach is Gates Bay named after Sir Thomas Gates, who was onboard the Sea Venture heading to Jamestown, Virginia when it ran aground on nearby reefs during a hurricane in 1609.( William Shakespeare - The Tempest movie and Play)

THE 400th ANNIVERSARY

A historian of Bermuda mentioned that this monument marks a fitting end to Bermuda's 400th anniversary celebration. The monument is a nine-foot wooden cross. It is a symbol of the original cross that was made by the survivors to claim the island for England. The monument displays some fifty names of survivors and decendants of the now Town Crier of St. George's. For the 400th anniversary, many descendants flew in Bermuda to celebrate the landing of the Sea Venture rack and castaways at Gates Bay, which landed some 350 plus years ago in 1609. At that time the Island was known as "Isle of Devils" for good reason due to the deceptive and treacherous reefs that claim many sunken ships dating back from the 1600's to 1990's.Note : The Shipreck was a 1\2 mile for this point with a fleet of nine ships.

ST. GEORGE’S MILITARY CEMETERY

ST. GEORGE’S MILITARY CEMETERYOn the right, at the junction of Barry Road and Grenadier Lane is St. George’s Old Military Cemetery, also called the ā€œYellow Fever Graveyardā€ because of its former use during the 19th century. One particular interesting grave at the Military site is that of a surgeon. He served in the Crimean War at the battles of Balaclava and Sebastopol only to succumb to yellow fever in tranquil Bermuda. In 1920, Bermuda had no railway and for all intents and purposes, no automobiles, buses, or trucks, either. Bermuda had boats. It had carts and horses & carriages. Bermuda got along very well like this for a long time, but now times are changing. Many people did not want the new smelly faster transportation and the American writer Mark Twain was one of them who lobbied against automobiles as well. But lots of families had their own rowboats. Mr. Wade, who lived near Tobacco Bay, used to row from Tobacco Bay to Somerset to help his sick uncle. Most locals were satisfied with what they had then, times were changing! On the left is the cozy beach named DREW'S BAY.

BERMUDA STONE MOON GATE IS A GOOD LUCK CHARM FOR A PHOTO OP. BUILDING'S BAY BEACH ALSO CALLED GLASS BOTTLE BEACH & ALEXANDRA BATTERY.The fort Alexandra Battery and Building's Bay Beach are located at the eastern edge of Bermuda, on Barry Road. The Deliverance, one of the two vessels that transported Sea Venture survivors on to Virginia in 1610, was built here. Alexandra Battery is a Fortification that was constructed in the 1860's. Just below the fort, there is a small beach which is well known in Bermuda for colorful sea glass. This beach was named after the princess of Denmark, Alexandra. She was married to Prince Edward VII who later became the King of the England. The fort was built on a site where there was another old battery, called Building's Bay Battery, which was built in the 1840’s. This one along with other fort was built to protect the eastern water ways. Not much is known about the actual protection.

GATES FORT AND TOWN CUT

DIASPORA TRAILGATES FORT AND TOWN CUTCUT ROAD IN ST. GEORGE'S, BERMUDAGates Fort was built around 1612. The small fort was named after Thomas Gates, the Governor elect of Jamestown, Virginia. Positioned with a great vantage point, the fort’s original purpose was to stop any suspect or enemy boats from entering Town Cut from the open Atlantic Ocean.Gates Fort was also known as the Town Cut Fort, and afterwards was called the Town Cut Battery. The fort sits right at the edge of Town Cut Channel which was created for ships to enter the St. George's Harbour. In 1790, Captain Andrew Dumford rebuilt this fort and mounted four cannons there. A guardhouse is at the entrance of the fort. The last occupants were of local descent. (Yellow flowers are called Angles Trumpet)

In later days, despite close links to the American colonies and the material aid provided to the Continental Rebels in the form of a hundred barrels of stolen gunpowder for the American War of Independence. Bermudian privateers had sloops captained by Bermudians that greatly surprised the maritime world, which doubled the travel capability in distance and time during Bermuda's Salt Trade. Bermudian privateers included Black slaves, as Bermuda had legislated that a part of all Bermudian crews, must be made up of Blacks. When the Bermudian privateer Regulator was captured, virtually all of her crew were found to be Black slaves. The American authorities will always offer these men their freedom. The Americans built and maintained Bermuda’s airport (Kindley Field) until 2000, when they cut their lease. In this cliff off Convict Bay, there's a tunnel which leads up to Fort William and the Gunpowder Plot Trail.

SOMMER'S GARDEN

Sir George Somers was a native of Dorset, England. He was a privateer in his early years and preyed on Spanish ships in the West Indies. He earned sufficient money to purchase land and build a comfortable home near his native town of Lyme Regis, Dorset. Somers was referred to as ā€œa lion at seaā€. In 1603, he was knighted by King James of England. In 1609, Sir George Somers was named in the Virginia Company’s Royal Charter to settle Virginia. In 1609, Somers sailed on the Sea Venture, the resupply fleet’s flagship, that was shipwrecked off Bermuda, after days of surviving a storm at sea. Somers knew he was responsible to complete the journey to Jamestown, Virginia, to deliver Sir Thomas Gates and the castaways. He supervised the construction of the Patience while Richard Frobisher, a shipwright, directed the building of the larger ship, Deliverance. They used Bermuda cedar wood and some wood from the wrecked Sea Venture. Frobisher’s Buildings Bay is named in honor of the work done by Richard Frobisher. The ships, loaded with food, sailed successfully to Virginia. A short time later the new Governor Thomas West, Baron De La Marr, ordered Somers back to Bermuda to gather supplies. After two days Somers died in Bermuda. His nephew, Matthew Somers buried his uncles heart in Somers Gardens and entrails in St. George's however, the remains of Somers body was buried in England. Soon after this Bermuda was named Somers Islands.Descendants of the castaways, who sailed on the Sea Venture in 1609, still live in Virginia, North Carolina, New Mexico, and New Jersey.
