BARBER'S ALLEY

Named for Joseph Hayne Rainey (1832-1887), an African-American, who fled the U.S. during the Civil War.While in Bermuda he owned a barbershop and his wife worked as a seamstress for Mrs. Walker, wife of a confederate solider. The irony is when he returned to Charleston after the war he became politically active and was the first African American Congressman elected in 1870 (and subsequently re-elected four times).Barber’s Alley was named in his honor and was the first project of The St. George’s Foundation.

PILOT DARRELL SQUARE

LEFT & FIRST RIGHTDIASPORA TRAILPILOT JAMES ‘JEMMY’ DARRELL SQUAREIn May 1795, James Darrell piloted Admiral George Murray’s ship, the 74-gun HMS Resolute, into Murray’s Anchorage on the North Shore near Tobacco Bay, St. George’s Parish. The Admiral was so impressed with Mr. Darrell’s skills that he recommended that Mr. Darrell be granted his freedom. Pilot Darrell was also known for his bravery. “I do hereby declare the said Jemmy Darrell to be exonerated and released from all manner of Slavery or Servitude whatsoever, and I do earnestly request all Persons to treat him, as a man actually and bona fide Freedman.”(by Governor James Crawford, March 1, 1796)Shortly after being freed, he purchased a house in St. George’s on what is now Pilot Darrell’s Square. It was restored in 1992 by his great, great, great grandson Romano Ramirez who lives there. Darrell was made a King’s Pilot on May 2, 1796. King's Pilots were premier pilots whose main responsibility was to pilot British Naval ships through the Bermuda reefs. History tells that Pilot Darrell was the first black man to own a home in Bermuda. This modest house was bought and owned by Mr. Darrell in the 18th century. Mr. Darrell was a slave who was “owned” by Captain Francis Darrell of St. George’s Parish. Historians report that he was quite a valuable slave, worth 100 British pounds. Mr. Darrell's experiences as a free man were not much different than during enslavement due to legislation introduced to limit the rights of freed slaves. He consistently fought these regulations which sought to limit his hard-earned rights. He wrote petitions asking for better pay for pilots, as well as the legal right for blacks to will their property to their wives, children or relatives. He died at the age of 66 on April 12,1815. On April 12, 2007, Premier Dr. Ewart Brown presided over a ceremony in the graveyard for slaves and free blacks at St. Peter’s Church in St. George's on the 192nd anniversary of Pilot Darrell’s death. In 2008, the Bermuda Archives held an exhibition, A Very Manifest Alteration, which unveiled the life, and time of Pilot James Darrell 1793-1816 . In honour of Pilot James Darrell, in 2009, a reunion of his descendants was held. Some of the descendants live in Australia, Bermuda and New Zealand. Head down to the BLUE ARROW SIGN on the wall on Queen Street take the next left and turn right onto Church Lane. James "Jemmy" Darrell, a free black slave was buried on the western segregated area for blacks by a dividing wall of St. Peter's Church graveyard that's opposite to his home.

ST.PETER'S CHURCH AND WHITE HALL

ST. PETER’S CHURCH NEXT RIGHT OFF QUEEN STREET ONTO CHURCH LANEDIASPORA TRAILST. PETER'S CHURCH & WHITE HALL OPPOSITE THE CHURCHEntry free of charge !!!St. Peter’s Church / Their Majesties Chapel located in the historic town of St. George's.St. Peter’s Church is held amongst history chronicles to be the oldest, constantly used Anglican Church in the western hemisphere. The current church was not the first house of worship on the site. It replaced a storm demolished structure in 1612 which was constructed from wooden posts and a roof of palmetto leaves. Inside, visitors marvel to see the altar from the original structure that was built in 1615 under the supervision of Richard Moore, Bermuda’s first Governor. This is the oldest piece of woodwork in Bermuda. Treasures in the vestry include a very fine collection of communion silver from the 1600's. The oldest part of the church is the area around the triple-tier pulpit. When you enter the architecture structure the decor of this church gives you a reflection back in the 1600's.The Bermuda Parliament first met at the St. Peter’s Church in 1620, thus establishing the assembly as the 3rd oldest Parliament in the world. Outside in the churchyard, there are two graveyards: one toward a walled area to the west of the church. This was for burial of the black slaves and reserved eastward was for whites. In 1698, St. George's had a population of one-third blacks who were mostly brought in from Africa as slaves. St. Peter’s Church remains an important site on the African Bermudian Diaspora Heritage Trail of Bermuda which traces the legacy of slavery in Bermuda. In 1713, St. Peter’s Church was expanded. The tower and wings were added in the 19th century. Regular service is still held on Sunday mornings promptly at 11am. And 400 years after the General Assembly first met in St. George’s in 1620, the Convening of Parliament and Throne Speech led by the now leader Premier David Burt of the Bermuda Government returned to the east end of the island to mark the 400th anniversary.

FEATHERBED ALLEY

DIASPORA TRAILMITCHELL HOUSE ON FEATHERBED ALLEYMitchell House was named after Mr. Walter Mitchell, an architect who had the home built in 1720. It’s been told that Featherbed Alley was named as such following the actions of a wife’s long suffering agony and annoyance over her husband’s excessive alcoholic binges. On one of his particular disorderly bouts, she dumped their feather-bed mattress out of the upper window of Mitchell House to the street below. When her liquored up hubby returned home, sleeping under the stars on the featherbed mattress seemed a splendid option as that’s what he did. At this building is a barred window of the Mitchell House,a Methodist Preacher, John Stephenson was imprisoned as he lacked authority and a permit to preach. He is noted to be the first Methodist minister to have a permanent posting in Bermuda. His spreading of the message of Methodism to blacks, whites, helped slaves and freed slaves was thought to be a threat. From that window with bars, he continued to preach while imprisoned. Government passed a law to silence him regardless of its location.

Construction of The Unfinished Church began in 1870 to replace St. Peter’s Church which was very badly damaged in a storm. The completion of The Unfinished Church was hindered by Parishioner's disagreements over fund allocations and the work came to a halt in 1899. A tornado demolished the roof off in 1925.There is no cost to visit this grey stoned majestic landmark. It’s an edifice of archways, in the Town of St. George's and is a very popular location for weddings and photo ops, special event backdrops, curious visitors and the consuming photographer. Kaufmann wrote an article titled “Decades ofDistortion: Norman S. Walker – Bermuda Blockade-Run Mail Henry P. Walker – Internal Consular Mail.”In that article, I stated: The only recorded use of the Forwarded by N.S. Walker St. Georges Bermudahandstamp is on a blockade-run cover. It shows the proper 12¢ rate, and it bears theship routing “Per Flora” into the port of Wilmington, N.C. This use clearly demonstrates Maj. Norman S. Walker indeed acted as a mail forwarder. To date, there are noother recorded examples.

SOMER'S GARDEN

SOMER'S GARDENSir George Somer's was a native of England, was a privateer in his early years and preyed on Spanish ships in the West Indies. He earned sufficient money to purchase land and build a comfortable home near his native town of Lyme Regis, Dorset. Somers was referred to as “a lion at sea”. In 1603, he was knighted by King James of England. In 1609, Sir George Somers was named in the Virginia Company’s Royal Charter to settle Virginia. In 1609, Somers sailed on the Sea Venture, the resupply fleet’s flagship, that was shipwrecked off Bermuda. After days of surviving a storm at sea, Somers knew he was responsible to complete the journey to Jamestown, Virginia, to deliver Sir Thomas Gates and the castaways. He supervised the construction of the Patience while Richard Frobisher, a shipwright, directed the building of the larger ship, Deliverance. They used Bermuda cedar wood and some wood from the wrecked Sea Venture. Frobisher’s Buildings Bay is named in honor of the work done by Richard Frobisher. The ships, loaded with food, sailed successfully to Virginia. A short time later the new Governor Thomas West, Baron De La Marr, ordered Somers back to Bermuda to gather supplies. After two days Somers died in Bermuda. His nephew, Matthew Somers buried his uncles heart in Somer's Gardens and entrails in St. George's however, the remains of Somer's body was buried in England. Soon after this Bermuda was named Somer's Islands.Descendants of the castaways, who sailed on the Sea Venture in 1609, still live in Virginia, North Carolina, New Mexico, and New Jersey.
