Tour Overview

This tour focuses on the region's cultural uniqueness. Located in northern part of the Appalachian Mountains, Garrett County has been significantly influenced by Appalachian culture in music, art, and folklore traditions. The climate and terrain have left this region somewhat isolated in comparison to the rest of Maryland. The isolation appealed to religious groups like the Amish and Mennonites, who brought a strong German influence to the area. Later, the area became a haven for the Methodist Chautauqua movement, noted for bringing entertainment and culture to rural America with speakers, teachers, musicians, entertainers, and preachers. This tour begins in Grantsville, with a stop in Friendsville, and is concluded in Oakland.
