Dartmouth Grange

Dartmouth Grange1133 Fisher Road, Dartmouthdartmouthgrange.orgAbout the GrangeThe Dartmouth Grange, established in 1888, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for families and the community by building an equal opportunity program of fellowship, service to others, and unity of action within a framework of fraternalism. Specific tools by which the Grange's mission is achieved include: Who We AreEnergies of the Grange are centered on areas of civic life that profoundly affect families and the community in the region served by the Dartmouth Grange; areas in which strategic financial support, volunteerism and community service will have a significant impact and make a lasting difference toward the betterment of the community. Strategies include economic development as well as other activities around philanthropic activities. Investing in organizations and activities that promote economic activity, invest in young people, strengthen public education, and sustain agriculture. Providing support for the needs of individuals and families in the community via the leveraging of resources, and programs which educate, enrich, or provide financial relief. Strengthening individual's abilities by working together, offering leadership development and encouraging individual advancement - both financial and personal. Acting as a catalyst for sustainable, positive change through programs that foster economic growth such as development of the Grange Kitchen. Developing an accessible and collaborative approach to activities that enhance its role as an active and relevant organization in the community. Our HistoryThe Grange was formed in the years following the American Civil War to unite private citizens in improving the economic and social position of the nation’s rural and farm population. Over the more than one hundred years of our work throughout the country, Grange members, supporters and volunteers have helped bring positive change to tens of millions of people. Granges were the warehouse-buying clubs of the nineteenth century. Their influence grew into a nonpartisan political lobby that worked to create laws now known as Granger Laws that are still important in anti-trust litigations today. The Grange is also credited for the Rural Free Delivery Program of the United States Post Office and created libraries to store and share books; many of which have become the community public libraries of today. Before cars, telephones, running water or even electricity, Grangers were fighting for the rights of citizens. At its inception in 1867, it was at the cutting edge for its time. The Grange gave women an equal vote with men even before the government granted it and was also the first organization in America to include all members of the family. On June 29, 1960, the 11-story landmark National Grange headquarters building in Washington, D.C., was dedicated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower and is the only private edifice in a federal block across from the White House. It serves as a non-governmental headquarters for agricultural and rural families. A professional staff administers policies established annually by democratic Grange processes at local, county and state levels. Please also visit the Massachusetts Grange and National Grange websites. The Grange's Motto: In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity.

Peckham's Greenhouse

Art PatronIT ALL STARTED FIVE GENERATIONS AGOin 1866, when Albert Peckham purchased the Peckham farm land. For the rest of the nineteenth century, he and his sons pursued farming with a hard-working New England spirit, specializing in vegetables, fruits, dairy, and of course, flowers.IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURYRaymond Peckham and his wife Clara continued the family farm, focused mainly on root vegetables. In the 1960s, their son Albert and his wife Mary Jane pushed the business towards house and garden plants. Their dedication proved fruitful, as the business grew and became a trusted name in the community for all things plants.PECKHAM’S GREENHOUSE TODAYIs run by Albert and Mary Jane’s youngest, Rick Peckham, and his wife Laura. Salt Marsh Pottery

Only open on Saturdays of the Tour weekends from 10:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.Visit us here at the workshop in this 1913 renovated school building. We are open to the public. Our pottery is made by pressing the flowers into the clay, hand cutting, shaping and drying the pieces, then ultimately hand painting, glazing and finishing them. In that mix are two or three firings up to 1800 degrees. The accessories shown here have another step which is making a master from the original clay impression so that we can make a form with an embedded design. From that we do the whole hand made process when the fresh flowers are just asleep beneath the ground. Now there are 4 of us here, mostly mothers, mostly part time, all of us people who have to work with their hands to be happy. Two paint exclusively and they do the wedding commemoratives and most of the gallery pieces. The rest do every conceivable thing from unloading 3 tons of clay a couple of times a year, to making pieces, loading kilns, handling orders and painting when they get the chance.1167 Russells Mills Rd, South Dartmouth, MA 02748https://www.saltmarsh.com508-636-4813sales@saltmarsh.com

Tiverton Land Trust

Tiverton Land TrustPardon Gray Preserve3460 Main Rd Tiverton, RI 02878tivertonlandtrust.orgSouth Coast Artists at Pardon Gray: Join us as we celebrate artists inspired by nature at Pardon Gray.ABOUT: The Tiverton Land Trust was founded in 1996 by a small coalition of Tiverton residents — to protect the future of farming in Tiverton from the mounting pressures for development.TLT’s co-founders, Mary Wehle, Joseph Bossom, Martin VanHof and Stephen Barker, came together in their desire to protect the land, preserve Tiverton’s agricultural community and preserve the fabric of their community. At the same time, one of the few remaining large farms in Tiverton was about to be sold to a developer who planned to build 80-100 single family homes on the site. Recognizing the imminent loss of a beautiful and historic farm, the newly formed Land Trust sought to save and preserve it as open space.Allen Smith joined the group which then applied for Open Space funding through the R.I. Department of Environmental Management (DEM). The DEM awarded $400,000 for the project, and additional grants were obtained from U.S. Fish and Wildlife, The Norcross Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, and Newport Water.Faced with the need even more funding to complete the project, the the Land Trust kicked off it’s first fundraiser with a concert held at the Four Corners Arts Center featuring the musician Pete Seeger. More than 100 people attended to show their support and contribute to the land preservation effort. A wave of community fundraising had began in earnest. The effort to save the farm was a challenging one. Several times it seemed that the farm would be lost. Ultimately in March of 2000, the 237 acres of farm and woodland was purchased for $1,200,000.
