#3 Peter Dickison

#3 on the BrochureArtist showing at: 103 Fogland Rd, Tiverton, RI 02878Peter DickisonBOTH TOURSOIL PAINTING: Landscape and flower paintings with magical lightart@peterdickison.comhttps://www.peterdickison.com401-787-7451Peter’s paintings resonate with a love of Nature. He seeks that which may not be visible or audible at first glance. Their narrative is about being in a place, an invitation to meditate on our existence in nature. His landscapes are like a quiet reckoning of the forest. They seek its mystery, looking for the beings that inhabit field and forest. The beauty of his paintings of floral blossoms unfolds as a sensuous experience, an understanding of it as a structure and seeing it from the point of view of the bee. The flower speaks to love, and a Dickison painting makes it possible to take that love home to remind us of its miracle.Turn in driveway at white picket fence and pull onto lawn. Please park where indicated.

She started playing with clay 9 years ago and now it is her full time project. Originally hailing from The Pacific Northwest and now residing in Tiverton, RI, Holly tends to incorporate elements of the ocean and mountains into her pottery. What makes her work unique and special is that she has developed many of her own glazes. These glazes reflect the colors and feelings that are evoked in her while being surrounded by the natural splendor of water and land. She knows them both well. Holly circumnavigated the North Atlantic Ocean, with her husband, on their sailboat. She has experienced many sea states from becalmed seas, gales, sunrises and sunsets in the middle of the ocean. She has also hiked into many of the alpine lakes in the Cascade Mountains in her home state of Washington.Holly's pottery pieces are meant to be used and loved freely. They are all oven proof, food, microwave and dishwasher safe. Her goal is for the owner of her pieces to also feel the connection to the ocean and mountains as they are being used.Holly's studio is located at the top of a long driveway. She has 2 gratine posts and a black square mailbox at the bottom of the driveway. Feel free to park at the top of the driveway. Our friendly dog Tilly will probably greet you.

#6 Peter Halpin

#6 on the BrochureArtist Showing at: 1722 Main Rd, Tiverton, RI 02878Peter B HalpinBOTH TOURSPASTEL/WATERCOLOR: Realistic candid pastel portraits to give as giftspbhalpin71@gmail.com207-405-1624Peter Halpin grew up in Connecticut and has enjoyed art for the past 56 years. Self-described as a hobby artist, Pete started out as a Central Connecticut State University college student, where he created a life-size sculpture: a bust of “Christ at Gethsemane” (a centerpiece at the University’s art show). At the time, Pete was studying Industrial Technology; and also separately received a degree in Electrical Engineering…..AND he threw in a few art classes on the side. Professionally, Pete went the "practical route" with years of teaching high school and then at the Defense Department. Art has always been in the background of his life. Most recently, Pete has revived his art interests and has been creating pastels and watercolors (80 percent pastel 20 percent watercolors). While living in Vero Beach, FL, he was fortunate to attend seminars sponsored by the Museum of Art there, which were taught by prominent watercolor artist, Steve Rogers. Pete would say that being a Virgo and a type "A" personality, with a numbers oriented background, he is probably the last person you would pick to be in the art world. As much as he admires, respects, and wishes he was more of an Andy Warhol, Picasso type guy, he has to admit, he steers closer to a Norman Rockwell type portraiture guy.Now retired and living in Tiverton with his wife, he looks forward to giving his artwork his full attention. His home studio is open during the South Coast Artists Tours in July and August.Whatever is being painted (in watercolor or pastel), Mr. Halpin will enjoy showing work-in-progress.Studio is located at 1722 Main Rd, Tiverton RI 02878. We have a small grey house with a long driveway. We are across from Standish Boatyard. If the driveway is full please use a side street -Middle Avenue- located to the left of our driveway. #18 Mary Ellen Flinn

#18 on the BrochureArtist showing at: Early Time Carving 273 Long Hwy, Little Compton, RI 02837Mary Ellen FlinnAUGUST 16 & 17 OnlyACRYLICS/WOOD/ANTIQUE FRAGMENTS: Folk art inspired carved and painted sculptures using found objects embeddedetcarving@cox.netThe artist’s work is clearly inspired by early American folk artists. The ingenuity, creativity and resourcefulness involved in their creations was endless. Some pieces were carved by highly skilled artists and others by the untrained. Regardless of the skill level, the shared need to create shines through.Mary Ellen is self taught having taken up woodcarving in midlife. A quick tutorial provided her with the basics regarding wood properties, hand carving tools and simple carving techniques. Then she on her own. When she begins a new piece it starts with a vague idea of what she is envisioning. She explained that it could have been inspired by just about anything, a color, a random piece of wood, an antique fragment, a broken tree branch, a pattern in a paper bag, etc. After more thought the idea begins to gel.Her woods vary from freshly cut to reclaimed wood from antique furniture pieces. She favors sugar pine. Colors are influenced by those used in early German Pennsylvania fracture. The colors exude a sense if warmth. She uses acrylic paints and early decorative painting techniques. A finished piece incorporates wood and paint along with the antique fragments integral to each piece. Her work tends to slant towards whimsy. She has said that she knows when a piece is complete when it brings it brings her to a smile. However, she feels the true sign is when an observer looks at the piece with appreciation.On-street parking in front of the property, then a short walk to the studio.

Each piece embodies her meticulous craftsmanship, incorporating shells, driftwood, sea glass, pottery shards, seaweed, bones, and other found objects. From her early silkscreens of bubblegum-hued bomber planes and race cars to her series of Arabian camels printed on brightly dyed plaster with pure crude oil, Salfi presents incisive social and personal commentary with a sly, stylish sensibility. A recurring theme in Salfi's work is perspective—both conceptually and physically. She explores subjects that require a variety of viewpoints to fully understand their depth and complexity. Physically, her pieces are designed to look different up close than they do from a distance, using techniques like dots, halftones, blurred imagery, and shifts in scale to invite multiple interpretations. In her most recent body of work, "Sweet Tender Love", Salfi delves into her family history, bringing a deeply personal narrative to her art. Yet, even in its intimacy, this series resonates universally, inviting reflections on love, loss, and longing. Born in Burlington, Vermont, Salfi was raised in New England and the Bay Area. Salfi received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and spent two years at Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles, where she printed editions for renowned artists like Robert Rauschenberg, Richard Serra, Vija Celmins, and Jasper Johns.Salfi maintains a dedicated studio practice in Little Compton, RI, and has exhibited her work in solo shows across both coasts, including A.I.R. Gallery (Brooklyn), Cornell University and Corners Gallery (Ithaca, NY), Arnot Art Museum, Elmira, NY, Mark Wolfe Contemporary Art (San Francisco), and BCA Center (Burlington, VT). She refers it as "paper montage; or, painting with paper". She layers torn and cut high quality transparent and opaque papers over each other, gluing them together to achieve depth of field with each intricate piece. She uses only paper and glue; she does not use paint on any of her montages. These take hours, sometimes months to complete depending on size and subject. A trained oil painter with a certificate in Painting and Drawing from RISD in 2010, Galen continues to move forward in her montage creations, continually teaching herself new techniques to grow and improve her art on a regular basis. What she loves the most is the relationship she has with the SCA as well as the many knowledgeable and talented artists in the region she has learned from and collaborated with over the past 19 years. Without this organization and these mentors, she knows she'd still be trying to figure it ALL out!Galen has a 'stream of consciousness' approach to demos. Texture and tactile experience are important in my process.” Painting with fluffy bits of unspun colored wool involves a delicate and deliberate layering of color to capture light, texture, and depth in soft impressionistic scenes, incorporating an element of the unexpected. The results are traditional landscapes created in an unconventional way that invite a second look.Discover how fluffy bits of colored wool can be transformed into impressionistic landscapes. Her work is vibrant in color representing the vivid colors and form that can be found within nature. She is intrigued by the human figure in its expressive state; she enjoys capturing and conveying the emotions of her subjects in her drawings, paintings and sculptures sharing her experiences with her viewers! Her artist statement is one of which best describes her interpretive thoughts of being an Artist and should be considered if one seeks to know her! Artist Statement: “As an artist one is often asked to provide a biography and an artist statement when invited to a gallery or show, I truly understand the intent; however I must admit that I personally feel that in order to know an Artist one must learn who we are through our reflections and look beyond our shadows. Who, what, when and why, how are we inspired; each and every creation is a mere reflection of these entire things collectively. Our perception of another’s interpretation can sometimes be misconstrued, we must not limit ourselves, study, be inquisitive, engage with one another; only then will we learn who we are beyond the shadows we cast. Art is an expression of one self and must be shared with others.” Vania Noverca ViveirosVania would love to do a painting demonstration of local shore birds for each day of the tour; typically the duration of each demo is 1- 1 1/2 hours long. When the digital era began replacing film and supplies became more difficult to find, she stepped away as the extensive time on the computer required in that new format was too close to how she spent most of her workday as an engineer. She sought out more tangible ways to express herself and found working with metal, flame, and hammer as a metalsmith gave her the perfect balance and at times a way to relieve the stresses of day.Now in retirement, she’s rekindled her love of photography. She capture the close up detail and beauty of flowers, worn beached objects, and elements of nature that cross her path on a large flat bed scanner in a process often called “Scanography”. Once used to digitize her photographic negatives, the high-resolution scanner is now her ‘studio camera’ and the fine detail it captures never ceases to amaze her. Whether a single bloom or a ‘medley’ of treasures, the objects are placed directly on the scanner glass with the cover left open. She builds depth and layers from foreground to background on the glass surface. Using a preview feature, she can see the image as it will be recorded and can rearrange elements until it’s just what she had imagined. To Donna, this process feels somewhat like organizing a group portrait. She place the individuals near one another in a pleasing and cohesive composition, intertwines outreaching elements to project a feeling of connection, and then captures the moment.Overall, she says “It’s all about passion, the joy of creating … and the continuous quest to learn and grow.”House on the right side going down Fox Lane (dirt) off of Drift Road. His new works illuminate the relationship between an artist and his model. Walden’s paintings and prints capture the ease of a connection that needs no words. They are demonstrations of being. Highlighting the process of observation, this exhibition brings viewers inside Walden’s studio – perhaps even inside the artist’s mind – showing us his focus on the plays of light and color, the tensions between surface and pattern. Like the Bay Area Figurative Artists of the midcentury, Walden explores his subject through the process of abstraction and obfuscation. Surprises lead the way to new discoveries. His art evokes both a physical and cerebral calm. Andrew Wyeth, who created countless works of Helga Testorf explained “I can't work completely out of my imagination— I must put my foot in a bit of truth—and then I can fly free.” Walden’s model, likewise, seems to bring him to the doorway of his own imagination.Walden received an MFA in painting from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, an MFA in Art Education from Boston University, and a BFA from the University of Framingham, MA. His solo exhibition at the Leslie Lohman Museum of Art in Manhattan was followed by extensive showings throughout New England. She creates intimate silk embroidered vignettes in a joyful, loving, and humorous manner. Carol feels the need for nonjudgmental human interaction is instinctual for survival. Sharing one essence with others unguarded creates human humanity. Japanese Shunga and Chinese Silk Embroidery influence her Silk Thread Paintings. Her Western viewpoint adds humor while honoring the two ancient art forms. This sensual-themed body of work grew as she recoiled from our acrimonious social climate. She felt the need for a figurative, collective, and supportive hug. The work is spoken from a sensual female voice, confident in her value and worth both to herself and the society at large, not one of objectification. Carol’s choice of using sewing as a medium is intentional. Working with dupioni silk supports and complements the sensual narrative. She establishes the shape of each character as a line drawing before transferring the design to silk. The color palette is created using a staining process. The embroidery layer finishes the personality of the artwork. Carol works in a conversational mode as the personality takes shape. Each mark adds depth, dimension, and emotion.

In recent years he has reconnected with and extended work he had done in the 1960s and 70s, often employing digital tools such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop but preserving the original gestural elements of drawing.Inspirational sources of his work are ancient cultures, history, science, music, and literature, as well as the work of other artists. The thematic or narrative content of his work is usually not planned but emerges as the work develops. “I now have technology, tools, space, and time not previously available to me. I have been very fortunate in that this has resulted in an intense creative engagement.”Long driveway, studio and parking behind house.______Eric C LintalaBOTH TOURSSTEEL/CAST BRONZE, ALUMINUM: Visual interpretations, in metal, of man's historical and cultural pastelintala@umassd.edu508-743-5224Prehistoric rock art, petroglyphs and pictographs, has had a profound influence on my work. Sheltered in caves or under vast cliffs, these images of human kind, animals and nature were inscribed, pecked and painted onto stone. The early inhabitants who made them, their knowledge, lost to the ages. The sculptures I create have become a narrative involving the interaction of human, cultural and natural events from the past and present. The shapes and marks that I make, the symbols created are echoes from the prehistoric past, they tell of my observations, experiences and events that have affected me. The challenge before me is to carry on, to re-investigate, to renew this tradition of communication utilizing contemporary materials and methods and through my visual interpretations I hope there spirits can live on.

After a career in graphic design and digital marketing, she started quilting to get off the computer and back to hand made work. Quilting allows Joan to work big and explore patterns and geometry found in nature. Her creative process begins with designing patterns and selecting or hand-dyeing fabrics to achieve the right hues and textures. The cutting phase, a daytime task due to the sharp blades involved, leads to careful piecing and pressing—equal parts sewing and ironing. Completing the quilt involves crafting the back, machine quilting the layers together, and finishing with a binding, a step she compares to framing a painting. Joan is constantly innovating as she incorporates hand quilting, applique, embroidery, and hand-dyed fabrics into her designs. Her work reflects a deep connection to the natural beauty that inspires her.Little Village Studio is located in the old firehouse right behind Davoll's.

I want to share with the viewer the feeling of the wind as it moves the clouds, the waves, and the beach grasses, as well as the texture of the sand, rocks, and broken shells beneath our feet. We are experiencing, as the seasons change annually, stronger storms, warmer ocean water, extended droughts, increased temperatures, salt water intrusions, and rising seas. These impacts destroy beaches, wetlands, gardens, farmland and summer houses. How will these losses impact memory and future experiences? As we feel our local climate change in these ways both intimate and immense, my paintings remind us that we must protect our natural beauty fiercely. Each day at noon and 3:00 pm, Genevieve Hunt will demonstrate how to build up washes used in value studies to create dynamic interplays of light and color. She will start with a monotone value study and move on to a study showing how to connect shapes and colors so that they direct the viewer's eye to the focal point. These value studies will illustrate the transparent and flowing nature that is unique to watercolor as a medium.Genevieve Hunt's studio is air-conditioned and will have seating and water/snacks for visitors to rest and refresh. This method is also known as flameworking.Another technique used in the studio is glass fusing, which involves layering pieces of glass and then melting them together in a kiln. This method is perfect for creating small jewelry pieces, like earrings, or slumping the glass into bowls and other 3D shapes. The artist also enjoys making suncatchers that beautifully capture and reflect light.Sandblasting glass is a fun technique with amazing results.
