Welcome to the Waldorf Area History Tour

Waldorf’s story is one of steady growth, determination, and prairie enterprise. Nestled in the heart of south-central Minnesota, this peaceful town began its journey in 1895 with the rise of nearby Plum Valley—a bustling hub of early rural commerce. A creamery, general store, bank, hardware store, and even a blacksmith shop quickly formed the backbone of the community, serving hard working farm families across Vivian Township.

At the center of early civic life was the Plum Valley Post Office, first overseen by A.J. Tangeman and later by the influential August Ewert. These pioneers helped connect the rural countryside to the wider world. As progress marched forward, the arrival of the “Alphabet” railroad in 1907 marked a turning point, bringing new opportunity and momentum just south of the original settlement.

Recognizing the future, August Ewert led the bold move of relocating key Plum Valley buildings to the newly emerging town of Waldorf in 1908. Businesses were reborn, including Ewert Hardware, operated by his sons George and Otto, ensuring that commerce and community thrived in the new location.

Named in the fall of 1907 and proudly dedicated on July 29, 1908, Waldorf emerged as a symbol of prairie resilience and progress. From its humble beginnings to its official founding, Waldorf stands as a testament to the vision and hard work of its early settlers—a small town built with big purpose and enduring pride.
