Start your tour at the Monument Street entrance to the property. Look for the stone pillars.
Front of House
Barn Foundation
Facing the house, walk around it to your left. You’ll come to a rectangular foundation of stones dug into the higher part of the hill.
Orchard
With the house and outbuildings on your right, walk through the gate posts toward the river to reach the orchard.
Summer House
The summer house was located near the orchard in the area between the house and the stone wall.
Stone Wall Overlooking the North Field
Walk along the stone wall, noticing the view toward the river and North Bridge. Look up to see the upstairs windows of the house and imagine the view from there without trees.
Nature & The Concord River
Continue along the stone wall until you get to the boat house and dock on the banks of the river. There would not have been a boat house here in Emerson and Hawthorne’s time.
The Rock
Walk back toward the orchard until you come to the large boulder. Have a seat if you’d like!
Vegetable Garden
Walk through the orchard and back toward the entrance drive. The site of the vegetable garden is on your right.
Door Yard & Outbuildings
Walk back toward the entrance of the bookshop. After completing your landscape tour, come in and shop and take a tour inside the house.
