Tour Overview

Amsterdam-Rhine Canal

The Amsterdam-Rhine canal is one of the most important transport links in the Netherlands connecting the port of Amsterdam with the industrialized Ruhr district in Germany. It connects the IJ in Amsterdam with the Waal at Tiel.

Travel along the 72 km long canal in a southeastern direction and enjoy the typical low lying Dutch polder landscape with its windmills, green pastures, black and white cattle, large variety of birds all existing in a remarkably organised harmony between urban development and nature.

Delight in old fashioned thatched farmhouses and quaint villages, admire the modern golf courses, industrial sites, the outskirts of the historic city of Utrecht, the cycle friendly town of Houten and experience two sets of locks, before entering the Waal at Tiel.

Make it an unforgettable experience whilst listening to the various fascinating stories about your immediate surroundings. Points of Interest include Tsar Peter the Great, the country's forgotten trades, including peat digging and horse drawn boats, the invention of the chocolate bar as we know it today, the new Dutch Waterline Defence System, golf, shipping, fishing, art, to name but a few.
