Tour Overview

Engineering the Euharlee Covered Bridge

The Euharlee Covered Bridge, built in 1886, is a marvel of 19th-century engineering. Its design was both practical and innovative—built to withstand heavy traffic, rushing water, and the test of time.

Interactive Tour Introduction

Welcome to our interactive experience at the Euharlee Covered Bridge! Step into the shoes of a 19th-century traveler facing a critical decision: how to safely cross the river using this impressive feat of engineering.

This activity invites you to explore how the bridge was built, why it has a roof, and the materials that keep it standing over 130 years later. Play along, test your instincts, and discover what makes this structure so unique.

Can You Cross the Covered Bridge?

You're traveling in the 1880s with a wagon full of goods. The river is swollen from last night’s rain, and the only way across is the new covered bridge in Euharlee. What do you do?

Option 1: Inspect the Bridge First

You see wooden lattice beams and pegs called "trunnels" holding the structure together.

Option 2: Wait to Cross

The creek is high and moving fast. You decide to wait and watch the water level.

Option 3: Cross Immediately

You drive forward without checking the bridge, hoping for the best.

If you inspected first or waited: Good job! The bridge holds, and you cross safely.

If you rushed across: Your wagon breaks an axle mid-bridge. Looks like patience would have paid off.

This activity works great as a guided game for kids and adults. Ask visitors what they would choose—and discuss how real travelers faced these decisions in the 1800s.

Explore Further:

  • What is a “trunnel” and why was it used instead of nails?
  • Why was the bridge covered?
  • What natural threats did bridges like this face?

Walk through the bridge with new eyes—each beam and peg tells a story of resilience and craftsmanship.
