New Brunswick, New Jersey, often referred to as the "Hub City," is a historically significant city situated along the Raritan River in Middlesex County. Established in 1730, New Brunswick has played a vital role in American history, evolving from a colonial settlement to a modern urban center.
Early History
The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans before European settlers arrived in the late 17th century. Dutch traders first established a presence, followed by English settlers. The city was named after the German city of Braunschweig (Brunswick) in honor of King George I of Great Britain, who was also the Duke of Brunswick.
Colonial and Revolutionary Period
During the American Revolution, New Brunswick was a key site due to its strategic location. The city served as a British stronghold in 1776 and later became a significant post for American forces. Notably, George Washington and the Continental Army passed through the city during the war.
Industrial Growth
In the 19th century, New Brunswick became a hub of industry and transportation. The completion of the Delaware and Raritan Canal in 1834 and the establishment of the Camden and Amboy Railroad significantly boosted the city's economy. New Brunswick was known for its factories producing rubber, cigars, and textiles, contributing to its rapid industrialization.
Educational and Cultural Development
New Brunswick is home to Rutgers University, originally chartered as Queen's College in 1766. It is one of the oldest higher education institutions in the United States. The presence of Rutgers has had a lasting impact on the city's cultural and intellectual life.
Modern Era
Throughout the 20th century, New Brunswick underwent significant urban redevelopment. The city became a center for healthcare and pharmaceuticals, with major companies like Johnson & Johnson establishing their headquarters there. The city's revitalization efforts have focused on cultural institutions, education, and medical services, making it a dynamic and diverse urban area.
New Brunswick's rich history is reflected in its historic architecture, vibrant community, and ongoing role as a center for education and healthcare.
