Tour Overview

Focus: Hyde Park

Historical Context

  • Roman Times: Bayswater Road (adjacent to Hyde Park) is part of a major artery leading from Londinium to Silchester and Bath.
  • Medieval Times: Hyde Park is owned by the monks of Westminster Abbey. Public hangings begin at Tyburn gallows.
  • Tudor Times: In 1536, Henry VIII acquires this land and uses the park areas for hunting, military reviews, and other general outdoor entertainment.
  • Stuart Times: In 1637, the park is opened to the public. Access is restricted, however, by a high wall. In 1660, the park is surrounded by a brick wall. In 1690, Rotten Row is widened by William III to allow three carriages abreast and is lighted.
  • Georgian Times: In 1730, the Serpentine Lake is added by Caroline, wife of George II. The last royal hunt is held in the parks in 1768. In 1783, public hangings are stopped at Tyburn near the present Marble Arch area and moved to Newgate Prison.
  • Victorian Times: In 1825, a wall around the park is replaced with an iron railing. The Great Exhibition (the first major World’s Fair) is held in Hyde Park, beginning in 1851. In 1866, the Reform League Riots occur in Hyde Park. In 1872, Speakers’ Corner is established. Marble Arch and Wellington Arch are constructed. Apsley House given to Wellington.
  • Modern Times: Hyde Park becomes a favorite place for major concerts and the celebration of Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee.
