Founded in 1966, Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum is housed in the 1819 home built for William Scarbrough, one of the principal owners of the Steamship Savannah – the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Designed by noted architect William Jay, Scarbrough House is one the earliest exmples of domestic Greek Revival architecture in the South, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1974.
The Museums’s collection exhibits ship models, paintings and maritime antiques, principally from the great era of Atlantic trade during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Museum also features the largest private gardens in the Historic District. The gardens are open to the public and offer free wifi.
