Tour Overview
"A past to cherish, a future to fulfill."
These words are inscribed on one of Macon's historic markers dedicated to preserving the city's rich African American History. The Black Heritage Trail of Macon explores thirty-seven African American historic and cultural sites that make up the very fabric of the black community of Macon in the 19th & 20th centuries.
From the historic Pleasant Hill District, with its significant connections to iconic figures such as Little Richard, Lena Horne, and many others, to the various churches, squares and historic businesses that represent groundbreaking moments in African American history —
The Black Heritage Trail of Macon seeks to tell the story and increase awareness of African American history in Macon, Georgia in order to build a more inclusive community today.
While some stops on the trail are open to the public, many of the historic sites on the trail are private residences or businesses are not. Be mindful, and do not trespass on sites that are not open to the public.
