Tour Overview
Portree is the capital of the island. Outside the Royal Hotel is where our short audio tour begins then on to Somerled Square, the centre of Portree, then the highland games ground (The Lump), the historic Apothecary Tower and finally ending at the harbour.
Some tips in Portree:
For shopping, head to Wentworth Street. Don't miss Skye Cakes (open Wed to Sat, 8 AM to 3 PM) for the best homemade brownies and bakes you'll ever taste. If you are looking for a 'sit down' cafe, The HIghland Cow Shop, offers great coffee and lunches, their shop next door is good for gifts. You also find the Caledonian Cafe here for a sit down meal.
‘The Green’ (road name), which takes you into Portree, also features several shops offering lovely gifts and cards at Òr, and high-quality sheepskin goods at SkyeSkyns, located down the stairway beside Òr. Skye Batiks and Inside Out outdoor shop, a little further along 'The Green' into Portree, are also worth a visit.
For something quick to eat in the afternoon, grab a takeaway lunch from Relish or MacKenzie's bakery, both known for their delicious soups and sandwiches. For locally roasted coffee and light lunches, Birch in the alley off Wentworth Street is a good option with takeaway salad bowls. Cafe Ariba at the top of road going down to the pier, is a favourite - though not a takeaway.
If you haven't booked a restaurant in advance… The Lower Deck Chip Shop on the Harbour and The Chippy at the top of the road leading to the pier both offer good fish and chips. Take note, 'The Chippy' fries in beef fat. For takeaway pizza, the renowned Pizza in the Skye, located slightly out of the village centre, serves well-priced wood fired pizza from a cabin - you can order online here. Alternatively, Siaway Pizza, near Portree Square and down the steps beside the Òr Shop, is another good option, especially for those who are gluten-free.
Deli Gasta—again a little out of the main village—offers pizza and other good quality food options, where—if you don’t have a booking—you may have a good chance of finding something to enjoy.
The Isles Inn, Cuchullin, Eighteen Twenty and Caberfeidh allow walk ins - but you may be best to head to these places a little earlier to avoid a wait.
Some restaurants you can check availability online include The Portree Hotel, Dulse & Brose, The Chargrill Restaurant, Rosedale Restaurant and Cuillin Hills Hotel. Scorrybreac also allows online booking but it's so popular it books out weeks in advance.
If all else fails, the Co-op offers food to take back to your accommodation. While perhaps not your preferred choice, they have a good selection of fresh options. Example: Stuarts Steak Pie, in the oven for 40 mins and it’s as good a Steak Pie as we’ve had.
These are our recommendations based on visitors who don’t have something already booked. It's always a good idea to check the reviews to make sure you're happy with your choice. Book any restaurant well ahead and you'll have no issues finding somewhere great to eat.
Our app makes it easy for anyone with a connection to Skye, like expats or those with family roots, to engage with local projects such as the Portree & Braes Community Trust. This is by no means a request, but simply a means to contribute to local community initiatives for anyone who wishes to do so. If you would like to make a contribution to the Community Trust, you can do so here - Thank you :)
