Tour Overview
Whether you’re heading east from Alice Springs or west from the Queensland border, the Plenty Highway offers a remote and richly rewarding journey through some of the Northern Territory’s most captivating outback landscapes.
Tropic of Capricorn
If you're travelling north out of Alice Springs, don't miss the Tropic of Capricorn marker about 30 km from town—an iconic photo stop before you reach the Plenty Highway turnoff, approximately 68 km from Alice.
Gemtree
A must-stop for all travellers, Gemtree is a great place to stop and have a break - fuel up your vehicle, visit the gem gallery, go fossicking, find a gem and get it set while you stay there. Pick a campsite or caravan park, book into one of the cabins( book ahead) and stay for their amazing camp oven dinner- but book in they are very popular.

Harts Range & the MacDonnell Bio-region
As you travel along the Plenty Highway, you’ll pass through lands cared for by pastoral families and Indigenous organisations. The uplifted landscape to the south is Harts Range. Look our and see if you can spot the ' Sleeping women' along the ridge of the ranges. These spectacularly dramatic peaks and crests are the northern most extent of the MacDonnell Range Bio-region. Soak up the hills and topographical relief going east, as they become increasingly rare!
Road Conditions
