Tour Overview

Gibson Desert Region — WA / NT Border Section

This vast, arid area lies within the southern extent of the Gibson Desert Bio-region, characterised by red sandhills, desert grasses, and dominant mulga and mallee vegetation. The terrain features scrubby, iron-rich gravel rises and deeply weathered soils.

Several creeks cross the highway here, including the Puta Puta (Churnside), Muwa (Shaw), Irving, and Armstrong. Water flow is short-lived and usually disappears quickly into desert sands or salt lakes. Keep an eye out for camels and wild dogs, which thrive in this harsh environment.

Natural and Cultural Highlights

Along this route, you’ll encounter gorges and waterholes rich with wildlife such as rock wallabies and unique plants found in the Central Ranges Bio-region. Several areas hold special significance for Aboriginal communities. Visit the nearest roadhouse for directions, cultural information, and details on local hazards.

Road Conditions

  • The Western Australia section up to the WA/NT border is generally in good condition.

  • The Northern Territory section features rough gravel with corrugations for approximately 180 km until reaching bitumen just before Uluru/Kata Tjuta National Park.
Drive carefully and adjust your speed according to road conditions.

Permits

Travelers need permits from both the Central Land Council (NT) and the Ngaanyatjarra Land Council (WA) to access this section. These can be downloaded from our website.
