Tour Overview
This stretch between Boulia and Winton lies in the heart of the Mitchell Grass Downs Bio-region, offering a landscape of wide horizons and subtle beauty. The scenery features vast grasslands, low Acacia woodlands, and gentle undulating terrain, with occasional ranges, peaks, and mesas providing dramatic focal points. From these high points, the views are far-reaching and unforgettable. Much of this is pasture country, with the land actively used for grazing.
Waterways & Channel Country
Scattered across this region are the iconic waterways of the Channel Country. These are typically dry, winding creeks that, during floods, transform into expansive networks of channels. Key creeks in this area include the Middleton, Mackunda, Ada, Boolbie, Opal, and Cadell, which all flow into the Diamantina River, contributing to the greater Channel Country system.
Unlike the narrow, dry channels, the river basins are broad, with braided channels and deep waterholes that can retain water long after the rains have passed. These waterholes become havens for waterbirds and wildlife, bringing the landscape to life.
