The 270-acre farm survives intact from the time John Brown purchased the lot in 1849. The site preserves the rural character of the historic farm as well as the 20th-century changes that were made to enhance the commemorative nature of the property, including returning the house to its original appearance, moving the barn, and creating a memorial at the gravesite. The property is enhanced by its dramatic setting and expansive open space. Experience the modest homestead that the Browns accepted as part of their mission to help free enslaved African Americans and contemplate Brown’s role in shaping American history.
