Ron Finlayson worked as a purser on the SS Klondike in the 1950's right at the stern-end of Yukon's famed riverboat era. A purser was responsible for the cargo and the comforts of the passengers.

The first and second S.S. Klondike

The first S.S. Klondike, which was built in 1929 by the British Yukon Navigation Company, ran aground in 1936.An almost identical boat was rebuilt from many parts of the wreck and a new S.S. Klondike was launched in 1937.

The S.S. Klondike National Historic Site represents an important era of riverboat transportation in our country. This ship was one of the sternwheelers that brought the world to the Yukon, and it was the Yukon River that welcomed them and carried them to our home.
