Hartwells locks
This spot on the Rideau Canal has two big gates called locks. This is one of the cool places where people dug a path for the water!
2 - Overflow
The river was dammed to create this basin of water.
3 - Combined Lockstation
When the canal was built at Smiths Falls, the original river was blocked by a stone arch dam and a new river channel was built.
4 - Modern Lock
It is 7.9 metres (26 feet). That’s as high as a two-storey house!
5 - Old Lock
These 3 old locks have not been used since the high level road bridge was built in 1974. A new deeper lock was needed for boats to pass under the bridge.
1 - Bridge
This bridge was built to connect the buildings on both sides of the canal.
2 - Lock gate
The locks here are built like a staircase! How many do you see?
4 - Celtic Cross
This Celtic cross is here in memory of the 1000 men and women who died while building the Rideau Canal.
5 - Colonel By Statue
Colonel John By was from England and the engineer who designed the Canal.
6 - Bytown Museum
This is the oldest stone building in all of Ottawa. When the canal was being built, it was used as a storage area for supplies, and offices for the workers.
