Historic Palmyra Museums

Explore five museums, each unique. The Alling Coverlet Museum features the largest collection of hand-woven coverlets in the United States. Envision yourself as a passenger on the Erie Canal at The Erie Canal Depot. The Palmyra Historical Museum is a former hotel and tavern highlighting local history. The Palmyra Print Shop features printing equipment made in Palmyra. The William Phelps General Store and Family Residence, the museum “where time stands still,” a 19th century general store operated from 1868-1940.

Museum of Wayne County

Experience the rich tapestry of people and stories of Wayne County through an impressive collection of artifacts and folklore located in the 1855 county jail and Sheriffs residence. Explore exhibits filled with diverse items confiscated from local inmates, the iron-barred jail cells and a military room. Antique glass and pottery displays, an old-fashion children’s room and kitchen and various 19th-century industrial items are also highlighted.

Montezuma Heritage Park

Montezuma Heritage Park boasts 7 trails and 140 acres that loop around the historic remains of the early Erie Canal. It runs along the Seneca River on one side and a huge marsh which borders the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge on the other. On the Cayuga-Seneca Lock 11 Trail you will find the Meil's Drydock along with a lookout deck alongside the marsh.At the Highland Street entrance there is a map which will show you where the lookout deck is located.From the outlook you can see acres and acres of the marshland, boasting many different types of birds and water fowl. The marsh backs up to the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge Center.

National Women's Hall of Fame

The National Women's Hall of Fame is an American institution founded to honor and recognize women. It was incorporated in 1969 in Seneca Falls, New York, and first inducted honorees in 1973. As of 2024, the Hall has honored 312 inductees. The organization also has a museum and giftshop for visitors to enjoy right along the canal in the former knitting mill.
