Tour Starting Point
Istiklal Avenue is a major transport hub, with Taksim Square at its northern end and the Karaköy/Galata area at its southern end.
The Easiest Way to Find It:
Metro
The primary connection point is at the northern end of the avenue.
Metro Station: Taksim
Line M2 (Yenikapı - Hacıosman): This is a crucial north-south line that connects to the M1 (to the old airport) and the M11 (to the new airport) via the Yenikapı interchange station.
Füniküler (Funicular)
There are two historic funicular lines that connect to Istiklal Avenue.
Füniküler Station: Taksim
Line F1 (Taksim - Kabataş): This short, historic funicular line goes downhill from Taksim Square to the Kabataş transport hub, where you can connect to trams, ferries, and buses.
Füniküler Station: Tünel
Line F2 (Karaköy - Beyoğlu): Known as "Tünel," this is the world's second-oldest underground railway. It climbs the steep hill from Karaköy (near Galata Bridge) up to the southern end of Istiklal Avenue. This is the best way to arrive if you are coming from the Sultanahmet area.
Tram
The main tram line is accessible via the F1 funicular.
Tram Station: Kabataş
Line T1 (Bağcılar - Kabataş): This is the main tram line that runs along the European shore. It passes by the Spice Bazaar, the New Mosque (Yeni Camii), and the Sultanahmet stop (for Hagia Sophia/Blue Mosque) before ending at Kabataş.
Bus
Taksim Square is one of Istanbul's largest bus hubs.
Bus Station: Taksim
Lines: Dozens of city bus routes terminate or pass through Taksim Square. It is also the main drop-off point for Havaist airport shuttles from both IST and SAW airports.
