Tour Overview

The Tour:

Step back in time with the Turtle Tour, a unique walking adventure inspired by Dr. David Bushnell and his famous Turtle Submarine — the first military submarine in history! As you stroll through Warrenton, discover fascinating historical landmarks and stories that shaped our town. Each location on the tour is marked by a small, painted turtle statue, guiding your way as you connect innovations like Bushnell’s Turtle to the rich heritage of Warrenton. Whether you’re a history buff or just curious, this tour offers an engaging way to explore Warrenton’s past one step at a time.

Warrenton:

Warrenton is the county seat of Warren County, and was incorporated as a town in 1810. The town is listed on the Register of Historic Districts with many historic structures, including the entire downtown district and homes along Main Street. The town square is filled with local businesses and restaurants. Warrenton is home to the Annual Sportsman's Festival and other special events held throughout the year.

Warrenton Main Street is accredited by National Main Street America as one of their Georgia Classic Main Streets. The Georgia Main Street Program has been an active contributor to the revitalization success of Georgia's historic commercial districts since 1980. All Classic Main Street Programs are designated by the state of Georgia and nationally accredited by the National Main Street Center annually. As part of the annual accreditation process all Classic Main Street communities are required to meet the 10 standards for accreditation. These standards place an emphasis on historic preservation education as well as economic development lending itself to an active and vibrant downtown.

Warren County:

Warren County is Georgia’s most beautifully diverse county with great natural resources that include streams, fields, forest, wildlife and the Ogeechee River on our western border. These precious natural resources combined with our friendly “good neighbors” and pro-business environment provides everyone with a wonderful opportunity to work, play and relax while raising a family in the southern Piedmont Plateau of Georgia. Warren County - Created December 19, 1793
