91-97 Clemence Street
The 3 story building, built circa 1900, has little official documented history. The property spent nearly a century housing various small businesses, most known only from advertisements placed in the local newspaper. Clemence Street was commonly referred to as ‘Pie Alley’ and some speculated it was a popular site for actors from the nearby Keith’s Theater to have snacks in between performances. The 3 story building was purchased by Cornish Associates in June of 2013. The renovations included much needed structural repairs. Modernization of the upper stories included 4 residential units with new amenities and 2 commercial units on the 2nd and 1st stories.1900 The sale of the lot is advertised in the local newspaper in 1900, the same year it is suspected that the building is built, architect is unknown.1995 The Providence Preservation Society lists the building in it's catalogue of indangered properties. 2013 Cornish Associates purchases the property and begins plans for redevelopment. 2015 Renovations begin, led by the team at Union Studios Architects. 2018 Renovations are completed and Cornish welcomes a new office use to the ground floor and second floor along with 4 new residental units on the upper stories. 2020 Shepard Fairey partners with Cornish, AS220 and RISD to paint the artist’s 100th mural on the North facade of the building. The artwork celebrates 30 years of OBEY GIANT in the city now notorious for its beginning. Depicted in the mural is Anjel Newmann - alum and Director of AS220 Youth.
