Mollies Lake
Trail InformationHike: approximately 1 hourThe trail leaves the road and ascends to the ridge. Follow the ridge and rock cairns to the lake. This is a poorly maintained trail and involves bushwhacking.Trailhead | DirectionsTravel north on the East Shore Road approximately 29 miles to road #46. Travel 1.7 miles to a prominent saddle on the ridge. A short old road on the right leads to the trailhead.
Lookout Mountain
Trail InformationThe view from the summit of Lookout Mountain is stunning. The Lions Head, Lion Head Ridge, Abandon Mountain and numerous other striking Selkirk Crest land features lay before those who make the 2 1⁄2 mile hike to the lofty vista point. In 1929, a cupola cabin was built to house lookout personnel. Along with the lookout tower (rebuilt in 1977) the cabin still stands as a sentinel overlooking the magnificent Selkirk Mountain Range. The unique building is listed on the National Historic Lookout Register and is, in itself, well worth the hiking effort.Trailhead | DirectionsDrive north from Coolin on Cavanaugh Bay/ East Lakeshore Road/ State Forest Road # 1 towards Lionhead Unit of Priest Lake State Park (23 miles). Continue about 4 miles past the Loinhead Campground and bear right onto State Forest Road #44. Continue on Road #44 for 2 1⁄2 miles to the junction with State Forest Road #43 turn right onto Road #43. Go 1⁄4 mile to the junction with State Forest Road #432 turn left onto State Forest Road #432 and climb steadily for 3.0 miles to the trailhead on the left. Follow the trail to Lookout Lake. Beyond the lake, the trail ascends to a small saddle and trail junction. Stay on the trail to the left. This trail segment will terminate at Lookout Mountain Road. Follow this road to the lookout site.
Rock Slides

Should you get injured while at the slides, EMS response and extrication will take hours to accomplish depending on weather and other conditions.Please be careful.Be respectful of others and “Pack it in Pack it out”Trailhead | DirectionsTravel north on the East Shore Road approx. 22 miles to Road #42, which is just past the Lion Creek Bridge. Turn right. Follow road #42 to its end, approximately 5 miles. The trail is an old road that follows Lion Creek for approximately 1 mile to a creek crossing. Cross Lion Creek and continue on the trail for approximately 1⁄4-mile to the rock slides. Take caution at and around the rock slides, accidents have occurred. A less traveled trail continues past the rockslide to the falls just a couple hundred feet up stream.
The Wigwams
Trail InformationHike: Approximately 1.5-2 hoursTrail length - 1 - 2 hours up and 1-2 hours back, approximately 2 miles one-wayTrailhead | DirectionsStarting at Cavanaugh Bay Road, travel 3.3 miles to east shore road and take it just over 15 miles to Two Mouth Road No.. 32. Follow that road about one half mile to a fork and go left, cross the creek and continue to another fork about 2.5 miles up and go right. At about 2.9 miles these is a sign about Idaho Endowment Lands at the fork. Go left, continuing on Road 32, which now becomes increasingly rough and switchbacks numerous times up toward Klootch Mountain. It is 4.4 miles to yet another for. Stay to the right on Road 324 and proceed steeply almost another mile to the trailhead at the end of the road. The last 4 miles require a high-clearance vehicle and perhaps four-wheel drive; also be sure to have good tires and brakes.
Two Mouth Lakes
Trail InformationHike: approximately 4-6 hoursThe trail is very difficult to follow but stays on the north side of Two Mouth Creek. Approx. 3 miles from the trailhead is a large rock band. Ascend to the north and work through the rocks. Standard Lakes
Trail InformationHike: approximately 3-4 hoursTrail has not been maintained for many years and is difficult to follow but stays on the north side of the creek. Follow trail for approximately 0.5 mile to fork in trail, ford Two Mouth Creek and ascend to upper Standard Lake.Trailhead | DirectionsHike: approximately 3-4 hoursTravel north on the East Shore Road approximately 15 miles to the Two Mouth Rd.#32. Turn right and travel on the main road for 2.8 miles to the old logging camp 11, junction of Rd.#2/32. Turn right on Rd.#2, cross Two Mouth Creek for 0.1 miles to junction of Rd.#2/325. Turn left on Rd.#325 and travel approximately 0.5 miles to the tank-trap blocking the road. Park and walk approximately 2.3 miles. Poorly maintained trail begins at the end of the road and climbs to the lakes. Another approach is to travel to camp 11 on Rd.#32 as described above. From there drive approximately 0.2 miles to the first switchback. An old, closed road leaves Rd.#32 at this switchback. Walk the old road for 1.8 miles to the trailhead. This is the trail to Two Mouth Lakes. Trail has not been maintained for many years and is difficult to follow but stays on the north side of the creek. Follow trail for approximately 0.5 mile to fork in trail, ford Two Mouth Creek and ascend to upper Standard.
Mount Roothan & Chimney Rock
Trail InformationHike: approximately 1 1⁄2 hoursHow about a hike to the 7,300-foot elevation level capped with the reward of incredible panoramic views? The beauty of Priest Lake unfolds nearly a mile below; the awesome grandeur of Chimney Rock seems but an arm’s length away, while surrounded by the Selkirk Crest. It can be yours for a moderate hiking effort and about three to four hours of your time. The Mount Roothaan/ Chimney Rock Trail is a popular route that leads into the backcountry of Priest Lake with spectacular vistas along the way. You can drive your vehicle (high clearance only!) to the trailhead parking area atop Horton Ridge at an elevation of 5,100 feet. From the trailhead, the 2-mile trail leads along Horton Ridge up to a saddle near the crest of Mount Roothaan. The last 1⁄2 mile of trail is “mountain goat country” very steep and rocky. The trail continues on to base of Chimney Rock for those hardy souls who survive the “mountain goat” climb and desire an additional two hours or so of hiking (round trip from Mount Roothaan to Chimney Rock.) Good hiking boots are a must on this portion of the trail as the route passes through an extensive talus field.Trailhead | DirectionsTravel north from Coolin 7.4 miles on Cavanaugh Bay/ East Lakeshore Road (or 4 miles south from the Indian Creek Campground) to Forest Road #24. This road intersects with East Lakeshore Road immediately north of Hunt Creek Bridge. Turn onto Road #24 and continue for 4 miles until you arrive at a fork in the road. Bear left at the fork onto Forest Road #2. After traveling 1.6 miles, you will arrive at the intersection of Roads #2 and #25. Road #2 continues straight and Road #25 continues to the right. Proceed on Road #25 for 4.1 miles to the trailhead parking area. The drive from the East Lakeshore Road to the trailhead will take approximately one hour.
Indian Creek
Trail InformationThis trail is named as such because of the way it winds along the creek, which is also the park boundary. The trailhead is near the day use area. You may choose to walk the entire length, ending near the Camp Host site or loop back to the beginning. This is a relaxing walk that can be done in half an hour.Trailhead | DirectionsBoth trails are located within the Indian Creek Campgrounds on East Lake Shore road.Viewpoint TrailThe trailhead can be found by walking past the entrance to Loops A and B on the old county road base approximately 100 yards. A trail sign on the left is the start of the trail. The trail winds through a beautiful stand of timber and then crosses East Shore Rd before it begins a short climb to a vista overlooking Indian Creek Bay. This hike can be done by all ages. Hunt Lake
Trail InformationHike: approximately 1.5 hoursTrailhead | DirectionsTravel north on the East Shore Road to Hunt Creek Rd #24. Turn right and continue on the main road approximately 4 miles to the junction of Rd# 2/24. Continue on Rd# 24 across Hunt Creek and bear to the left, still on Rd# 24. Continue for 1 mile to the junction of Rd# 24/243. Bear left on Rd#243 and travel for 3.5 miles to the end of the road and posted trailhead. There is a small trail sign to the east of the parking area. Follow this trail that quickly becomes a boulder field. Orange dots painted on the boulders mark the trail across the boulder field to Hunt Lake. There are several heavily used campsites at the north end of the lake.
Hunt Creek Falls
Trail InformationHike: Approximately 20 minutesTrailhead | DirectionsTravel north on the East Shore Road approximately 4 miles to Road #23 and turn right. Follow this road less than approx. 1/8 mile to the first left hand turn, which has an Idaho Department of Lands sign posted. This road continues to the Hunt Creek Falls. However, no turnarounds are available near the falls. Park at the camping area and hike less than 1⁄2 mile to the falls. Hike is on flat ground.
Fault Lake
Trail InformationHike: approximately 2 hours from Hunt LakeTrailhead | DirectionsFrom Hunt Lake hike the trail along the west side of the lake across a boulder field until you reach the south end of the lake. From there ascend to the prominent saddle to the south of the lake. Fault Lake is visible from there. Scramble down through talus slopes to the lake.
Sundance Mountain Overlook
Trail InformationThis lookout is accessible with vehicles; there are trails at the top near the lookout.Trailhead | DirectionsTake Highway 57 to the East Shore Road going to Coolin, approx. 7 miles. Turn right at the Community Center onto East Shore Road, go approx. 3/4 mile to Rd. #19 and turn right. Travel up this road #19 for 0.9 miles to the junction of Rd#19/191. Bear right on Rd.#19 and follow for 2.8 miles to the junction of Rd.#19/2. Take left onto Rd.#2 and follow for 1.4 miles to the junction of Rd.#2/207. Bear right onto Rd.#207 and ascend for 2.3 miles to the lookout. Road is rough and 4-wheel drive is recommended.
