Kniebishütte

The pass over the Kniebis was very important as a trade route between the Rhine valley and Württemberg. In the Middle Ages this area became strategically important from a military perspective. As a result several fortifications were built here over time. In 1632, a fortification called the Kleine Schanze or Alte Schanze was built on the summit of the mountain between boundary stones 52 and 53 on the road leading to the pass. There are no visible remains left, but an information board by the road indicates where it was. Alexanderschanze was a fortification first mentioned in the year 1674. In 1939 Hitler built one of his Führer Headquarters on this site, the Tannenberg, which he used only briefly in 1940. It was destroyed by the German army in 1945 and now only vague trenches can be made out beside the intersection covered by heavy vegetation

Forellenhof (Trouts)

The centuries-old Forellenhof is sited in a really wonderful location in the heart of the Buhlbach conservation area. Hospitality and fish farming have a long tradition here – and, after extensive refurbishing work, the old »Fischerstüble« became an impressive Black Forest house in 2017. The Forellenhof team offers a range of fresh trout specialities and hearty snacks in the cosy parlours – the »Forellenstube« and the »Buhlbachstube« – and on the spacious sun terrace. Freshly smoked trout and other delicacies can also be purchased in the shop here.
