Start: Geroldsauer Mühle

Our driving tours usually start in front of a supermarket. Why?Usually visitors want to see as much as possible during their driving tour. Getting food during the day can sometimes become a bit of an irritation - restaurant's opening hours often don't work with your touring schedule, you forgot to make a reservation, or the places are just packed with other people. While it is nice tasting the local food during your day tour we always recommend to bring a long a sandwich and some drinks to get you through the day. This allows you to stay independent during the day. You don't have to rely on restaurants or cafes. Therefore our driving tours tours will start you out in front of a supermarket or bakery. This gives you a chance to grab a few items to take along - just in case.

how it works

Prior to touring, we recommend familiarizing yourself with the app. Read through the instructions below on how the app works. To skip the instructions and start the tour now, hit 'Next' on the bottom of the screen.

Prior to touring

Prior to touring to the Summit Road you should find out whether it is foggy or not. This can happen almost anytime of the year - even in summer. If that's the case you might want to either wait an hour or two to see if the fog lifts. Or skip parts of the Summit Road and take freeway A5 instead to get to a later stop (e.g. All Saints Waterfalls). Recommendation: have a look at the webcam at Lake Mummelsee to get an idea what the weather is like.

High Summit Road

Within 15 minutes from Baden-Baden you reach the main ridge of the Northern Black Forest, an area called Bühlerhöhe. Here, there is an old luxury hotel called Bühlerhöhe. The hotel was built in 1914 as a hospital for military officers but was never officially used as one. Instead it was converted to a luxury hotel and over years fell into disrepair. In 1999 it was purchased by SAP Founder Dietmar Hopp, who then resold it in 2010 to an investment group. The plan has been to refurbish Bühlerhöhe to its ancient glory but the costs have proven to be an obstancle.Next to the hotel is the Max Grundig Clinic, a Luxury Hospital where soccer stars, managers and politicians from all over the world come to recuperate. Hotel Bühlerhöhe, Schwarzwald-hochstraße 1, 77815 Bühlwww.buehlerhoehe.deFor the next 30 minutes after Bühlerhöhe you will pass several ski areas with names like Ruhestein, Schliffkopf, Zuflucht and many more. You will also notice some of the mountains hotels frequented by the locals.Feel free to pull over to the side of the road if there is a parking spot to take in the scenery. On a clear day you can look to the west over the Rhine Valley dividing Germany and France and in the distance beyond, see the Vosges mountain range in France.

Allerheiligen (All Saint's Abbey & Waterfall)

Interested in an old ruin or a walk to a waterfall? In that case I recommend stopping at Allerheiligen Klosterruine (All Saint‘s Abbey Ruins). The ruin and waterfalls are located 8 km off the Summit Road B500. You will need to turn right (green arrow) off the Summit Road. There is a small sign pointing to ‚Allerheiligen‘. The road is quite curvy. You will drive back on this same road later to get back up on the Summit Road again. My recommendation: it is a bit of a drive to get all the way down to Allerheiligen. I love the waterfalls though since they are really not too known and absolutely beautiful. If you do decide to detour to Allerheiligen plan in 1.5-2 hours

Photostop Zuflucht

Perfect vista point! You can enjoy perfect views from the Summit Road over the Rhine Valley. But often it can be difficult to find a good parking spot. They are not really marked cleary. I would like to point out one hidden vista point which can be found almost at the end of your drive on the Summit Road. The area is called Zuflucht. The place is also a launch area for paragliders which can be fun to watch. The views from here are incredible – so even if you don’t care for paragliding, its worth coming to this spot to just have a look at the views.Picnic. There are also some picnic benches if you want to bring something to eat or drink.I only recommend this stop when the weather is clear.

Kniebishütte

The pass over the Kniebis was very important as a trade route between the Rhine valley and Württemberg. In the Middle Ages this area became strategically important from a military perspective. As a result several fortifications were built here over time. In 1632, a fortification called the Kleine Schanze or Alte Schanze was built on the summit of the mountain between boundary stones 52 and 53 on the road leading to the pass. There are no visible remains left, but an information board by the road indicates where it was. Alexanderschanze was a fortification first mentioned in the year 1674. In 1939 Hitler built one of his Führer Headquarters on this site, the Tannenberg, which he used only briefly in 1940. It was destroyed by the German army in 1945 and now only vague trenches can be made out beside the intersection covered by heavy vegetation

Forellenhof (Trouts)

The centuries-old Forellenhof is sited in a really wonderful location in the heart of the Buhlbach conservation area. Hospitality and fish farming have a long tradition here – and, after extensive refurbishing work, the old »Fischerstüble« became an impressive Black Forest house in 2017. The Forellenhof team offers a range of fresh trout specialities and hearty snacks in the cosy parlours – the »Forellenstube« and the »Buhlbachstube« – and on the spacious sun terrace. Freshly smoked trout and other delicacies can also be purchased in the shop here.
