Townhall Staufen

Looking around the square, notice the accidentally clever design: The four converging streets are offset, making the square feel especially cozy. The soldier atop the fountain holds the shield of Staufen, with its symbol: three golden goblets on a red field.Dominating the square is the Town Hall (Rathaus). The coats of arms represent the various powers that have controlled Staufen over the centuries. The golden seashell at the top of the right peak indicates that this was a stop along the Camino de Santiago, the medieval pilgrimage route that leads all the way to the northwest corner of Spain. The Town Hall restoration in 2007 left the building looking beautiful but is also threatening to destroy Staufen. Notice the troubling cracks running along the building facade adjoining the Town Hall (you’ll see similar cracks all over town). The restoration included the installation of a heat pump--an environmentally friendly solution intended to set a good example for townsfolk. Engineers drilled deep into the ground behind the Town Hall, built heat exchangers, and for a few weeks everything worked perfectly. But then cracks began to appear. Apparently, the drilling punctured a layer of material deep beneath Staufen that hasdestabilized the town's foundation, causing Staufen to rise almost a centimeter every month. More than 250 homes have been damaged so far. By 2010, some sections of town have risen by 30 cm with no end in sight.

Schladerer Distillery

The Alfred Schladerer Distillery produces high quality fruit schnapps since 1844. The Schladerer family is now in its fifth generation. I highly recommend stepping into the store to taste some of their fruit brandy. They also sell a selection of miniature bottles which make great gifts for people at home.Good to know: In one bottle of "Schladerer Kirschwasser" are 8 kg of cherries.

Cafe Decker

Looking for the best cake in Town? Cafe Decker is a must-stop when visiting Staufen. Their cake and chocolate selection is out of this world! They also have lunch items.Cafe Decker, Hauptstraße 70, 79219 Staufenwww.cafe-decker.de/Opening Times Tuesday- Sat 6.30 AM – 6 PMMonday 12.30 PM – 6 PMSun & Pub Holidays 1.30- 6 PM

Weinbrunnen

Don’t get too excited about this spot’s nickname; unfortunately there’s no magical spring spouting free wine here. But there is a small kiosk selling you a sample of local wine. Wine (along with taxes levied on silver, which was mined deeper in the Black Forest) once brought Staufen wealth...and it still helps out. People from all over come to the “wine fountain” pavilion on this square to sip local wines, many of them made from the Gutedel grape, also known as Chasselas. At the benches between the fountain and the gigantic wine press, look for the photo of a red-sandstone courthouse that once stood here. That building, like much of Staufen, was devastated by an Allied bombing late in World War II (February 8, 1945)--you’ll see other photos of the damage around town.
