Simpson's Brewery (Closed)

Simpson's Brewery, Baldock, demolished 1968Baldock Brewery was founded in 1730. In 1853 Joseph & Thomas Simpson bought the brewery in 1853. It was first registered as Simpson’s Brewery Ltd in 1935 and sold to Greene King in 1954. The Brewery was closed in1965 and demolished in 1968.

Three Horseshoes (Closed)

The Three Horseshoes closed in 1911 and is now the site of a barbers and nail bar, the passageway through to Bakers Close is still there.

The Cock Pub

The Boot

The Boot as you see it today was built in the 1920s near the location of the former building which was much smaller and stood in line with a row of small cottages. All the older buildings have now been demolished.

The Arrow Beershop (Closed)

Between the Boot and Pinnocks Lane, in the mid-nineteenth century, were four cottages, the Arrow beershop then five more cottages.

The Beehive / The Swan (closed)

The Beehive was a pub that formerly stood on the corner of Pinnocks Lane on the High Street. Open for buisness as the Swan in, it is assumed, the 19th Century, and closed as licensed premises sometime at the beginning of the 20th Century.One of the photographs taken in the early 1960's shows just how much the top of the High Street has changed, with the Beehive pub to the left of the old Astonia cinema

The Hen & Chickens

The building you see today was built in the 1930s on the site of the former Hen and Chickens pub which was built about 1860

The Crown & Anchor (Closed)

In the 1800's, perhaps even before, the Crown and Anchor stood around the site of the current Catholic Church on the London Road/ High Street roundabout. The pub is the building on the right in both photos. The Crown and Anchor was sometimes known as just the just The Anchor, it closed at some point before 1920

Angel Inn (Closed)

The Angel Inn stood on the site of Brown and Gammons, the adjoining building is still there.

The Goldcrest Inn (Closed)

The front of the building dates from the early 1700's when it was a private house. It didn't become an inn until the 1970's when it was sold to Bass who converted it into a pub and restaurant. In 2013 it was sold with planning permission to turn it back into a private house.
