The public parking is scenic and also offers public toilets, the walk starts by crossing the bridge.

2

Fishermen+s Huts

The path winds between the fishermen+s huts with a sandy bech on the left and a quaint inlet on the right. The fishing boats anchored look almost miniature in size.

3

TURN LEFT

Head left following the path towards the gate and in the direction of the forested area by the sea.

4

GO THROUGH THE GATE

Go through the gate, following the path until you get to the salute cannon in front of the main building." The great merchant Harald Plum, who owned Torø from 1917 until his death in 1929, had a salute cannon erected, which was used to salute when particularly prominent guests came to the island. It is a revolving cannon for 5-6 shots. It has been out of use since Harald Plum's death."Harald Plum made his fortune selling canned foods during the 1st World War. After the war a collapse in commodities prices coupled with the loss of government contracts crippled his companies. The original buildings date back to 1822 but a fire in 1982 destroyed them. A major renovation took place in 2020. Do not approach the buildings- it is private property and owned by the Copenhagen Teachers Association and today used as a childrens holiday camp. Keep along the path in the direction of the sea.

6

FISHING NET POLES

The remains are few but some poles in the sea may indicate the past use of fishing nets. Picture shows Harald Plum walking alongside the wooden barrier created to stop erosion

7

DECISION TIME

At one stage the eccentric owner wanted to build a replica of the famous Copenhagen landmark "round tower" but the building only reached the 2nd floor by the time of his passing. You can still see the building which is part of the Copenhagen Teachers summer camp accommodation for children. Do you follow the path and signs or do you keep to the shoreline and go out to the cross which stands as a lonely figure out on the northern edge of the island marking the remains of a family found when excavating on the island.

8

THE UNMARKED CROSS

A cross erected in respect of a family whose remains were found on the island. The inscription reads :-"On Christmas Eve 1928, this cross was erected in memory of three unknown men, woman and child, whose final resting place was the hard stone bed under the foot of the cross. It must stand as a reminder of the unfathomable accident that centuries ago ended the lives of these people here and as a warning to sea and land that peace and security now and for all the future will receive everyone who comes to Thorøs Land."
