Railway Station - architect Cottinelli Telmo -1945

Cottinelli Telmo was not only the architect of the railways, but also the chief architect of the Portuguese World Exhibition in 1940 and co-architect of the most famous monument in Lisbon: 'O Padrão da Descoberta'. But Cottinelli Telmo was not only an architect. He was also the film director of the Portuguese film: 'A Canção de Lisboa', the editor-in-chief of the magazine Sphinx and so on, in short, a universal artist: ”designer, poet, actor, director and musician. This railway station was the last one made for the 'Algarve Line' and therefore a lot more 'modern' than the other well-known stations.Watch the trailer video above with an impression of Cottinelli Telmo's exhibition 'Os Arquitectos são Poetes também'

Mustard Building - Aurora Arquitectos + Furo

The Mustard building is the 'backside' of of the Rose-House (project 8. after the next project) and an addition to the existent building on the back of the plot facing Princesa Street.Being Vila Real de Santo Antonio city center heritage protected, has strict rules to follow: (1) all new buildings are obliged to have exactly 12m height; (2) to have a clear distinction between old buildings and new additions, the design façade should not be similar to Pombalino style - rectangular french windows organized in an orthogonal grid.Aurora Arquitectos + Furo from Lisbon, took the challenge to set by the regulations and create a four-floor building divided in two to allow more light in the central patio. To improve the opportunities for social interaction and the common amenities of the residential complex, it was decided to use the last floor to locate a small swimming pool and a terrace for sunbathing. For the facade, they designed a set of one pane sliding windows out of alignment. The dimension of the windows and the ability to disappear inside the walls can transform the living rooms almost into outdoor terraces making the most of the weather of this region. For the interior, their option was to explore the opposite of the exotism of the existent building and design calm interiors similar in all the flats with wood and cream terrazzo. To this relaxing atmosphere, we added a bold element – an open partition of wood painted in a gradient of pink that organizes the social space of the flats and makes the chromatic connection with the beginning of this story: the Rose Building, that now is mustard-rose. Rose Building - Aurora Arquitectos + Furo

This story of the Rose building begins with an old rose building on the riverside avenue of Vila Real de Santo António. The rose-house had a nice and rational facade, but the real treasure was inside. An exotic interior with details such as a mermaid painting in the ceiling of a bathroom, a multitude of patterned mosaics, detailed wooden doors, and a big stone sink. It was obvious from the beginning that we should keep and emphasize the exotic interior. The program asked from the LIsbon architects Aurora Arquitectos + Furo for the transformation of the layout from a single house to a five apartments building and gave us the perfect reason to create five different environments that play with site- specific idiosyncrasies of each space.A selection of colors and materials, combined with extensive architecture details preservation and the introduction of new contemporary elements, allowed them to create five flats with distinctive personalities, where each one is contributing to a general set that pays homage to the exotic qualities that they found in the original building. The Grand House - architect Ernesto (Ernst) Korrodi

This Hotel, now the Grand House takes us back for a moment to the early 1900s, when Manuel Garcia Ramirez commissioned Swiss architect Ernesto (Ernst) Korrodi to renovate an existing hotel on the Guadiana River in Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA).The Swiss architect Ernesto Korrodi changed Bern for Portugal. He became one of the most famous architects of his time and realized about 400 projects, mainly in the north of Portugal. We know his style in Europe as Fin-de-Siècle; a mix of classical architecture with a transition to Art Nouveau, called “Modernismo” in Portugal and Spain. Entrepreneur Garcia managed to persuade the VRSA board to change the strict requirements that only the "Pomball style" should be built in the "historic center". The Grande Hotel Guadiana, with its fine architecture, is clearly different than the fairly uniform “Pombal architecture” that dominates the facade towards the water. The 50-room hotel was mainly intended for entrepreneurs (canning industry) from all over Europe who came to VRSA for “business”. The then hotel "Grande Hotel Guadiana" received an extensive refurbishment in 2016 and is now a 5-star member of Relais & Chateaux. The former hotel had a casino called Peninsular in Monte Gordo; the new Grand Hotel has a Grand Beachclub with its own (mini) beach in the mouth of the river with a pleasant restaurant & swimming pool.Click here for our blog about "The Grand House"Photos taken from website:https://www.dropbox.com/sh/tjwevrb90b6ppx5/AADg_14jnfN9RvOKlNdW09Rwa?dl=0

Praça do Maquês de Pombal & More - 1773

As the Minister of King José I, the Marquis de Pombal had the rational city of Vila Real de Santo Antonio built in 1773 according to the ideas of the “Enlightenment”. With 41 building blocks in an orthogonal grid as a kind of checkerboard pattern with in in the middle a large square with an obelisk. A form of urban planning that the Roman architect Vitruvius already describes in his 10 books about architecture and that was mainly motivated by military strategy and rationality. But especially because of the possibility of aligning the two main axes of the city with the dominant wind directions and keeping the city fresh and dust-free.Around the square with radiating lines in the pavement are some buildings of interest, as the Igreja Matriz church, the customs office, the military headquarters and the town hall. Most of the buildings have been realized using a prefab construction method that consist of a wooden latticework system covered with (hard) stone. A construction method that Pombal already used to rebuild the lower city of Lisbon after the earthquake of 1755. Drawing Praça do Maquês de Pombal: Teun Swinkels

Holiday House MGdCosta - architect Manuel Gomes da Costa - 1998-2005

This small holiday home that architect Manuel Gomes da Costa (1921-2016) built for himself in Vila Real de Santo António was designed in 1998. Although the last modification of the original project bears the date of June 3, 2005, it is in all probability the last design that he made as a working architect.A house in which he only occasionally stayed for a weekend and which is his last work. Even though it is a small work and perhaps not very important, in the admirable stock of work of residential architecture (more than 400 projects) it is the culmination of more than fifty years of dedicated and intense solo career. He always worked alone and never employed any staff. So a cycle that started in VRSA with his first project: a market building - a proposal that was never was implemented - would also come to an end in his hometown.
