O Convento

Project: O Convento - all photo's Copyright © O Convento & Filipe MontieroAdress: Traverse Antonio Bento 10 Architect: Filipe MonteiroWebsite: https://www.conventoolhao.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/conventoolhao/ About the project:O Convento is hidden at the end of a narrow lane in the coastal town of Olhão – very close to the promenade and the local markets. This B&B looks quite inconspicuous from the outside, which makes the surprise all the greater when you step inside! The entrance area leads into an inner courtyard with colonnades, tiled floors and a fountain at the centre. It extends over two floors and opens up to the sky (it can be closed in winter). The architecture and the quiet ambience will remind you a li!le of a monastery, but the building has a diferent history. It used to be a dormitory for women who worked in the fishing industry. During the renovation process, the exterior façade was largely left as it was, and the remodelling took place inside. The inner courtyard was inspired by the Moorish style, which also characterizes the surrounding old town of Olhão. The former dormitories grouped around the courtyard were transformed into guest rooms. Both the floor space and the height of the rooms are very generous. The predominantly white rooms are partly furnished with antique furniture and have spacious marble bathrooms. The two rooms on the second floor can be reached via a narrow spiral staircase. On this level you will find also the roof garden with several terraces and a pool. The view extends over the roofs of the city and across the lagoon to the ofshore islands. Breakfast is served in the common room on the ground floor. Here, guests are spoiled with local delicacies and freshly baked pastries served at a long communal table.Video from: The Things We Love - As Coisas Que Amamos - Annabel Aguirre

Casa dos Gelados

Project: Casa dos GeladosAdress: Rua das Ferrarias 24Architect: SENA Architects - all foto's Copyright © Sena ArchitectsAbout the project:The collective Sena Architects has completed the rehabilitation of a house in the center of Olhão, Algarve. The use of natural materials, worked by local artisans, is one of the highlights of this project. Casa dos Gelados is a renovation, expansion and interior design project of a building dating from 1920 and located in the historic center of Olhão, Portugal. It is a project intensely focused on the use of natural, local materials, crafted by local artisans but with contemporary design. As the building has already undergone some changes in the past, this intervention aimed to restore the spatial and architectural identity, as well as the quality, taking advantage of the type of construction, the versatility of its volumes and the interior organization. The project also took advantage of some pre-existing elements, such as the existing garage, something very coveted in the center of this fishing village, due to the scarcity of parking.

Casa Barreta

Project: Casa BarretaAdress: Rua 31 do Janeiro 24Architect: SENA Architects - all foto's Copyright © Sena ArchitectsAbout the project:Situated in the oldest street in Olhão, Casa Barreta is a typical "fishermen’s" cottage that has been organically rebuilt and expanded for over 150 years. During the 70’s it was once more subject to alterations, the top floor expanded and most of the traditional and original features were covered or removed as the aesthetical concept of that era considered “old” to be “ugly”.50 years later we intend to revert the “modernization” of the 70’s, cleaning up the facades and removing all the materials once used to hide the original structures. Windows that were once covered will be reopened, added internal divisions will be removed, stairs will rearrange and spaces will be widened. By opening up the facade as much as possible to the exterior we bring in light and air, hugely improving the living quality to a property that was once composed of multiple indoor rooms with no access to windows. As the House is enclosed in Historical area of Olhão, the materials used in the reconstruction are carefully chosen and obey to similar standards as listed buildings. Therefore all windows and doors are of solid wood, all wall renders are limestone, all pavements are traditional terracotta and all stones are local. The vast majority of the materials is local and produced by hand, an effort undertaken by not only the will to restore this building to its original form but also to feed the industry that still supply us with this precious materials.

Marmelade House

Project: Marmelade HouseAdress: Rua 31 de Janeiro 28. Architect: SENA Architects - all foto's Copyright © Sena ArchitectsWebsite: http://www.themarmaladehouse.ptFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/themarmaladehouseolhao/ About the project:The first project by Sena Architects was The Marmelade House, in Olhão in 2014. Located in the most typical neighborhood of the city, Bairro da Barreta, with the purpose of being a rental vacation home. This project was a rehabilitation of a pre-existing building, which would have been about 150-200 years old. Made with materials of the time, stone, lime and vaulted brick ceilings. The proposal was to maintain as much as possible of the existing building, respecting the traditional architecture and the area in which it is located, as it is located in a historic and quite typical area of the city.“There is a strong Moorish influence in the town and many of the houses like this are composed of a ground floor, first floor and a flat roof, called an ‘açoteia, originally used for drying almonds and figs ” The area of Olhão is characterized by a architecture of Cubist buildings. This is one of those examples, with a simple facade, with stonework and a "platibanda". During the process many historical details were discovered. The option of keeping them exposed was therefore taken (Sena) The objective of this project was to respect as much as possible the traditional traits and, if possible, bring them back. The materials used were local and traditional, including the use of lime, which nowadays is in disusion. It remains one of the most typical buildings of Olhão with typical Santa Catarina tiles on the floor of the roof terrace. The program is divided into two floors. On the ground floor is the bedroom, maintaining its original location. Allowing it to be cool in hot summer days. The vaulted tiled roof was renovated, and sanitary installations were added. On the upper floor are the kitchen and a living room. A wall with exposed stone was rehabilitated and on the roof terrace was a pergola installed.

Casa em Olhão

Project: Casa em OlhãoAdress: Rua de São Sebastião 31 Architect: Studio ODS - all foto's Copyright © Studio ODSAbout the project:The intervention consists of the rehabilitation of an existing house built at the end of the sec. XIX. The house is located in a fishing district on the western edge of the historic center of Olhão, the plot has 90m2. The house still retains many original elements of the vernacular architecture of Olhão, strongly related to an ancestral practice of fishing. Even after the various changes made over time, it was possible to rediscover and rehabilitate original elements such as the patio stairs; the observation deck on the roof, the vaults, and the limestone ashlars.Only after demolishing the illegal constructions and removing all the industrial tile coverings, it was possible to understand all the natural beauty and spatial quality of the house. The entry of natural light and ventilation had been blocked by consecutive additions built over time. The resistant walls in “caliça” stone masonry were in excellent condition, allowing them to be maintained in their entirety.A patio was opened in one of the interior compartments of the house, allowing light and natural ventilation to enter the center of the house. This new element alters the house's relationships with the outside space and with the public space, reversing them to the interior of the courtyard in the center of the house. The alcove, only accessible from the patio, was created as an extra and informal space to sleep, read, sit or meditate. On the first floor, two rooms have opposite relations with the public space, one to the north towards the main street and the other to the south towards the alley; in the center both are related to the patio through openings with different shapes, sizes and materials. The floors in Santa Catarina tiles, white marble in specific elements, the white painted wooden window frames and the wooden entrance doors painted with natural dark blue oil, seek to interpret the balance between authenticity and simplicity found in the Algarve's vernacular architecture.

Casa Almirante Reis

Project: Casa Almirante Reis - AL (Alojamenta Local)Adress: Rua Almirante Reis 55/57Architect: Saudade- all foto's Copyright ©Saudade Website: https://www.luzdoalgarve.eu/accommodation/luz-almirante/ About the project:This project started as a request for small works to be carried out by the new owners, but quickly turned into a renovation of the whole house, the terrace and finally the decoration of the whole renovated space. This old building of 200 m2 consists of a first floor with very high ceilings as well as a bedroom and a bathroom on the terrace which has a view over the whole city. All the old floors have been restored, the large stone staircase as well and the stucco on the walls has been repainted because of the damages caused by the passage of time. The owner managed to "save" the beautiful stucco stone banister thanks to a local craftsman who knows how to use this technique. The kitchen and bathrooms have been completely redone in harmony with the rest of the house but with the modern comfort that the owners wanted. The ceilings with their original mouldings have been carefully repainted so that every detail is highlighted and can be seen with the naked eye. The decoration has brought elegance to this hundred-year-old house which had lost its charm by being poorly maintained.

Petit Village

Project: Petit VillageAdress: Rua Padre Antonio Trindade 2 /Traverse da Trindade Architect: Saudade ArchitectsWebsite: Facebook: About the project:This project was set up as a kind of urban renewal project to give a new residential function to a fallen down corner in the center of the city. These charming (sale) apartments, which look like small houses, are the result of a collaboration between Saudade (architects) and Imoart. It is an attempt to create a residential complex with the appearance in a traditional Algarven style using modern materials so called Light Metal Structure system. The structure consists of aluminum profiles that are clad in a kind of half-timbered construction on the inside with plasterboard and on the outside with plywood and an insulation board. The whole is then plastered with a special thin plaster layer that is reinforced in some places with a plastic mesh. The houses have a roof terrace and a block-shaped chimney, which is characteristic for the architecture of Olhão.If you tap lightly on the stucco you can hear the hollow sound which indicates that there are insulation plates behind it and not bricks.

Casa Delgado

Project: Casa DelgadoAdress: Rua Luis de Camões 25 /Traverse Luis de CamoęsArchitect: SENA Architects- all photo's Copyright © Sena ArchitectsAbout the project: Under Construction (2022)Casa Delgado is an expansion and rehabilitation project of an existing 2-storey building, intended for housing. It is located in the center of Olhão and is located in a corner. A building that dates from the end of the 19th century, witnessed by its historical characteristics, such as the vaults, the stone and lime walls, the use of stucco and plasterwork and the decorative elements present on the façade. The original building is in a high state of degradation and in complete disrepair, being at risk of collapse, due to a major fire that occurred in the past. To overcome this situation and “save” the building, the main premise was to see and treat it as a whole, introducing a new supporting structure, in order to restore stability to the existing one, before any possible alteration or expansion. As for the facades of the building, the intention was maintained to rehabilitate the existing ones, when possible, only giving way to the opening of new openings, rhythmically proportional to those present and in order to allow more natural light to enter, improving their interior experience.Entering Casa Delgado through its main entrance, from Rua Luís de Camões, we find the imposing hall, designed by its long barrel vault, which leads us to a distribution area for the three bedrooms on this floor. Here it was intended to maintain the original configuration of the building in order to save the existing vaults. Each room works as a suite, with a sanitary installation and an individual closet area. There is also a storage area and a garage on this floor, something very coveted in the city of Olhão, given their scarcity. The 2nd Floor, which is in complete disrepair after being ravaged by fire, will be completely remodeled, with the sole aim of saving its facades, which were kept in good condition. This will be the "living" floor, where we can find an open space area, which houses a living room, a kitchen, a sanitary service and an outdoor patio with a swimming pool. The kitchen is designed as a functional module of this floor, presenting itself in the form of a “box” where all the circulation develops around it. It also gives rise to a large island that separates the living area and the dining area.Continuing towards the courtyard, we find three large arches that mark the entire area, giving this interior façade an imposing design and leading us to the three exterior areas. Here we can find a small outdoor kitchen, with a living area and a swimming pool with jacuzzi, which is marked by the openings, eventually being integrated into the main facade, becoming part of it and being visible from the outside.
