History Center of Freeborn County, 1031 Bridge Avenue, Albert Lea
The Freeborn County Historical Museum, Library and Village has a variety of Herfindahl's work on display. In the Herfindahl Gallery, there are two large murals and a sample panel created prior to the mural being installed at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea:Honoring Chester Nelson - Created in 1977 in honor of Chester Nelson, a custodian at Ramsey Elementary School from 1957 to 1974. The mural later hung in Halverson Elementary School. A Century of Service to Others - Created in 1981 to honor the American Red Cross on its centennial. This mural features several area citizens and their services to others. Panel from the Mural presented to First Lutheran Sunday School - Commissioned by Mr. and Mrs. Roger Hallum in memory of their daughter Jeanne who was killed at the age of four in an automobile accident. The full mural is on display at First Lutheran Church, Albert Lea. The mural is painted in panels, balanced in dark and bright colors in such a fashion that viewed at a distance the bright panels form a large bright cross against a deeper, more somber background. There are also a number of prints in the Herfindahl Gallery.Located outside the Herfindahl Gallery are three pieces:Rainy NightPickeral LakeViking LandingAs you head into the exhibit there is a portait of Albert Miller Lea.Continuing into the exhibit hall, you will see two large maps of Freeborn County. One depicting the county prior to settlers moving in, the other showing the differences once settlers arrived.In the exhibit gallery there are three exhibit cases where Herfindahl painted backdrops for the collection items:AgricultureArchaeologyCranes On the first floor of the museum, there is a large mural that was gifted to the museum when Hawthorne Elementary underwent rennovations.

THE HISTORY OF FREEBORN COUNTYDedicated in 1985, the largest figures of this painting depict the early arrivals in Freeborn County. The U.S. Dragoons wear their uniforms, which Herfindahl copied from drawings at Fort Snelling. Among the group is Albert Miller Lea who conducted the cartography of the area. The models for the characters within were Herfindahl’s Albert Lea, MN acquaintances. A composite of early buildings is shown throughout the mural.
