Tour Overview

Wan Chai is one of the oldest and earliest developed districts in Hong Kong. In the early days of Hong Kong, British merchants Lancelot Dent built warehouses, docks and villas which was driving the economic development of Wan Chai.

During the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, the area around Wan Chai was a key area for the Japanese army. There was a comfort area where comfort women provide services to military, a district government office for interrogating prisoners, and an area for executing prisoners and placing corpses. As a result, Wai Chai have been many ghost stories which are the most numerous of Hong Kong's districts. The detail of ghost stories were most related to the massacre of Hong Kong people by the Japanese army. However, some of the buildings have been demolished. Through these ghost stories, on the one hand, we can understand the shadow left by the public during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong. On the other hand, we can understand the history of the region and reflect on the importance of cultural and architectural conservation.
