11.Old Port

The first embryo of the future port of Sanremo probably existed since the time of the Saracen raids between the 9th and 10thcenturies..In the 80s of the last century there was also an attempt to establish in the port of Sanremo, a docking point for the ferries of a well known company that served between the ports of Liguria and Corsica.t worked for a certain period discreetly because it brought more people and therefore more commentry, but above all more vehicles. In the end, however, after some problems that occurred during that period, the Company had to give up landing because the basin was not deep enough to allow an easy manoeuvre to dock and the large traffic flow caused a blockage for the whole port area

12.FORTRESS OF ST. TECLA

PORTO VECCHIO, with the fortress of St. Tecla ​built by the Genoese in the eighteenth century, along the coast of the city, in an area now used as gardens. The goal of this construction was not so much to create a defensive bulwark of the territory but to control, and if necessary counteract, the development of the Matuzian city.

The stays in Sanremo was so beneficial to the Empress that, as a reward, she wanted to donate a large sum to the Municipality of Sanremo to purchase the first palm trees and adorn the walk she frequently traveled.

The church, prototype of Roman church, was built in the 12th century (perhaps by the Masters Comacini) on the remains of a tiny early Christian church , dated to 811, where Bishop Siro used to celebrate the holy Mass.

La Pigna can only be discovered on foot !
