Dutch Apple

Scientific Name: Malus domesticaSummary: This is a fruit-bearing tree that has white flowers in the spring and summer giving way to apples in the fall. There are two Dutch Apple trees on our property that produce apples that are good for sauce and pie. The reason that I picked this tree is because it has been on the property for a very long time and is important to the people who live on the road.

Lilac

Scientific Name: Syringa vulgarisSummary: This is a large flowering bush that grows along the side of Winn Road. There are two Lilac trees on our property that produce a light purple flower that grows in a cluster. The Lilac tree's flower's come in many colors but retains the same shape. The reason that I picked this bush is that the flowers are noticeable from the road.

Blueberry Bush

Scientific Name: Vaccinium corymbosumSummary: This is a fruit-bearing bush that has small white flowers in the spring and blueberries in the late summer early fall. There are four of these small bushes planed along our backyard fence. They have small green leaves during the warmer months that turn red in the fall. The reason that I picked this bush is because of the usefulness of the fruit.

White Spruce

Scientific Name: Picea glaucaSummary: This tree is typically found in mountains or cleared pasture, this tree is found in my backyard. It is a rather tall and wide tree that was used by the last owners as an outside Christmas tree. It is noticeable from the road due to its size and how it is on top of a small hill. The white spruce has thick branches but the needles are not super prickly. The reason that I picked this tree is because of how large it is and the history that is surrounding it.

American Elm

Scientific Name: Ulmus americanaSummary: This tree is typically found in rich and moist soils, usually along streams, this one is found in my backyard. It is not too tall yet but will grow to be a rather tall tree. It is a very tough and hard wood and has rounded leaves that are coarsely toothed. I picked this tree because it is one of the more rare trees since most elms were wiped out because of the Dutch Elm disease.

Climbing Hydrangea

Scientific Name: Hydrangea petiolarisSummary: This is a climbing flowering vine that has grown up the trellis on the side of my house. It has flowers in the summer that die off in the winter. I picked this plant because I like the flowers that it has in the summer and it is interesting how it manages to climb.

Pin Cherry

Scientific Name: Prunus pensylvanicaSummary: This tree is found throughout Maine, this one, in particular, is found in a ditch in front of my house. The pin cherry has dark red-brown bark and long leaves that are rounded then narrows out. In the warmer months, they have small red bright red fruits and the things are slender and red. I picked this tree because it is an interesting little tree and I have not seen many others around.

Black Cherry

Scientific Name: Prunus serotinaSummary: This tree is known to grow on any type of soil, this tree, in particular, grows up behind our cow barn. The bark of this tree is a darker red-brown to a black color the leaves area a narrow at the base that widens out and then narrows back out again. The fruit is a dark purple to black color, unlike the pin cherry. I picked this tree because it is interesting to see the difference between the two cherry trees.

Striped Maple

Scientific Name: Acer pensylvanicumSummary: This tree is typically found in shaded moist areas, this one is found in the woods behind my house. It is normally mixed in with conifers and other hardwoods. It is distinguishable because of its striped bark and the three-lobed leaves. The reason that I picked this tree is because of the bark, it is an interesting difference from the other Maple trees.

Tamarack

Scientific Name:Larix laricinaSummary: This tree is typically found in swampy places, this tree however is found on the outside of our horse pasture. The Tamarack has spines that form a triangular shape and they turn yellow in the fall and they look almost soft and then fall off. The reason that I picked this tree is that I think it is interesting that it is one of the only conifers that lose all of its spines.

Japanese Meadowsweet

Scientific Name: Spiraea japonicaSummary: This is a small shrub that grows in front of our horse barn. It has small flowers in the warmer months and the small green leaves turn red in the fall. I picked this plant because it is interesting to see the flowers and it attracts both bees and butterflies in the summer.

Oriental Bittersweet

Scientific Name: Celastrus orbiculatusSummary: This is a woody vine that grows up the side of my Dad's workshop/goat and chicken barn. It has small leaves in the summer before they turn yellow and fall off in the Fall. It has separate vines that come from the same spot making it almost look like a tree. I picked this tree because I originally thought that it was a tree and that was where a lot of our chicken liked to nest before it gets cold.

Raspberry

Scientific Name: Rubus idaeusSummary: This is a vine-like shrub that grows along a rock wall in the horse pasture. It is red-colored and has thorns. In the spring it has small white flowers that gave way to red edible fruits. I chose this plant because of the fruit-bearing capacity and that it is a wild raspberry instead of a domestic one.

Willow

Scientific Name: Salix nigraSummary: This tree is found typically near ponds, rivers, and even underground water sources. This Willow is found on Winn Road near a small pond. It is easily noticeable from the road by its shape and its drooping branches that are distinct in Willow trees. I picked this tree because Willows is easier to identify because of their shape and branches.

Scarlet Oak

Scientific Name: Quercus coccineaSummary: The Scarlet Oak is typically found in dry soils, this tree, however, is found at Lee academy on Winn Road, It is noticeable by the red inside and how the leaves turn a dark red in the fall helping to lend to its name. I picked this tree because of how the bark is an interesting color, and I like the color of the leaves in the fall.

Norway Maple

Scientific Name: Acer platanoidesSummary: This tree is typically found in Europe or Asia as it is originally from there. However, this tree is located at Lee Academy on Winn Road. As this tree is a foreign tree it has come to be popular for providing shade. I chose this tree because of the dark red color along with how is something that is not from around here.

Boston Ivy

Scientific Name: Parthenocissus tricuspidataSummary: This is a decorative Ivy that is found on the Lee academy school building out on Winn Road. It has green leaves during the warmer months before it turns to a bright red shade in the fall. I picked this plant because it was the only Ivy that I could find and it was an interesting color and leaf shape.

Black Oak

Scientific Name: Quercus velutinaSummary: This tree grows in dry gravel areas, however, this tree was found near a dentist office in Lincoln Maine. The bark is smooth on young trees and dark and rough on older trees. The leaves are seven lobed and the lobes are shaper with a more narrow space between them. I picked this tree to show the contrast between black and white oaks.

Common Hawthorn

Scientific Name: Crataegus monogynaSummary: This is a tree that is normally found in Europe and Asia, however, this one was found in front of a dentist's office. It has white flowers in the warmer months that then become dark red berries. The leaves are small and light green and have four lobes on them. I picked this one because I like the berries and the fact that it can be used for medicinal purposes.

Rugosa Rose

Scientific Name: Rosa rugosaSummary: This is a decorative plant that is grown on the main road in Lincoln. It has bright pink flowers in the warmer months and small red berries in the fall. The leaves are small and round and area bright green color that turns yellow in the fall. I picked this one because it was interesting to me how a rose plant grows berries and the leaves were interesting.
