Black Mountain Center for the Arts Sign

Our beautiful eggplant and gold sign was created by local artist and sign maker extraordinaire, Mary Soyenova. The sign is hanging from an iron forged creation by Black Mountain celebrity Dan Howachyn, of Black Mountain Iron Works on Padgettown Road.

Brushcan Mural

Created by Asheville artists Scott Allred and Jeremy Russell in the summer of 2019 this mural depicts the arts that make BMCA the lively arts center that it is. Allred and Russell looked to Thomas Hart Benton and the regionalist style as inspiration for this mural to create a fluid and dynamic painting that both matched the energy of the arts at BMCA and the feel of our historic building and small town.

Julia Burr Sculpture

This sculpture titled "The Absence of Reality" was created by local artist, Julia Burr. Made of painted mild steel, stone, and locust, Burr says about the piece, "I was exploring the different point of views of the loads we carry, how to determine whether they are real or only perceived to be real. Perception and attitude affecting every step, the figure is bent and leaning forward, straining to carry that rock and yet the rock and its tether are "floating" a couple of inches off the ground., and that rock is real and has real weight."

4

David Seils Relief

This three dimensional relief wall sculpture on the East wall of our Clay Studio was created by local artist David Seils. The artist/sculptor has revived an art style that has been used for thousand of years to decorate walls and the frieze of buildings, relief sculpture. In the past, artwork was tediously carved in marble or limestone to only a depth of a few inches to create the illusion of depth. With the advantage of new materials, the same effect can be accomplished by building up the relief sculpture instead of carving.

Julia Burr Mural

The mosaic mural on the West wall of our Clay Studio was created by local artist, Julia Burr. Her inspiration for this beautiful piece was "that the arts and the art center are a great big splat of color in an often grey and brown world."
