Tour Overview
Pender County and Burgaw NC is home to everything Blueberry!
Although there may be debate of who was the first to develop domesticated Blueberries in Pender County, two individuals are historically relevant to the beginnings of Pender County’s Blueberry History. Each innovator has a significant influence on Blueberry production in Southeastern NC.
Pender County, home to many blueberry producers, is one of the largest growing locations. Blueberries flourish in our soil, producing an abundant variety of Blueberries. Annually, during the blueberry season, typically from May to July, Pender County produces millions of berries that are sold to businesses, residents, and visitors by the pints, pounds, or flats.
Pender County and the Town of Burgaw is also home to the North Carolina Blueberry Festival, founded in 2003 and held annually the third weekend in June. The festival is a premier event for Pender County and the Town of Burgaw, attracting more than 50,000 visitors. In addition to celebrating our Blueberry Heritage, the festival hosts the Blueberry Pancake Breakfast each February. We are also home to the NC Blueberry Scholarship Pageant and the Annual New Year’s Eve Blueberry Drop.
With locals and visitors calling it “Blueberry town,” you are sure to find a delicious variety of blueberry desserts, jams, and merchandise being sold at our local farms, markets, shops, and businesses at the peak of the season and throughout the year.
Pender County Tourism has created a Blueberry Trail that leads you to fresh blueberries, blueberry fields, shops, eateries, history, and more.
Disclaimers:
Please be aware that the length of our Blueberry season depends on the amount the fields produce.
Please remember that most businesses included on the trail are following CDC Guidelines. Call ahead to check what precautions they are taking.
