Entering the Big Coulee and the Camp Wenonah Hardwood Forest
You are now entering a geological feature known as a coulee. Coulees are formed by erosion from glacial meltwater in the most recent ice age. The trees that you are seeing at this point are 2nd growth hardwoods. There are several ways to identify the tree species that you are seeing.

Upper Coulee - The Mature Forest
At this point you are seeing a mature forest stand of oaks, hickory, walnut and maples. There are several ways to identify tree species. Let begin by finding the easiest to identify trees - the maples. In addition to maples distintive leaf, we can find maples by the branch patterns.
