Hazleton Art League

The building is handicap accessible.The Hazleton Art League will be hosting a special posthumous exhibit of the work of artist Fran DeBellas. HAL member and artist Virginia Dignazio will also have her work on display, as will photographer Michael Delmonico, who will also be on site with his mobile photo booth!Fran DeBellas was born and raised in the Hazleton area, attended local schools and graduated from MMI in 1965. He continued his education at Penn State University and received a BFA in 1969. He then studied abroad at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College of London,and his travels there led to his interest in architecture and landscapes. He also did graduate work at the Art Students League in New York City as well as the City College of New York. Upon returning to Hazleton, he opened Terrestria, a plant shop and later Shibui, a gift shop. He and his brother established Hocksworth and Moss, a construction and design company responsible for work at the Corner Cafe and The Chili Parlor. In 1979 he moved to Philadelphia where he worked on business and private interior design as well as murals. His last venture was in hand painted linens for George Matouk in New York City.His accolades include: 1967 First Place at the Hazleton Art League, 1969 a one man show at the Slade School, 1970 Pattee Gallery at State College, Central PA Council of Arts. Fran passed away in 1987.Inspired with a lifelong love of the arts, Virginia Dignazio began her journey as a painter in 2007 when she enrolled in an acrylic painting taught by her daughter, artist, Gina Dignazio. She's been honing her skills and exhibiting her artwork ever since. Her paintings have been on display at Hazleton Art League, Fine Art Fiesta in Wilkes-Barre, Art at the Markle, Hazleton Public library, Boscov's Family Restaurant, Bloomsburg Fair and Bloomsburg Children's Museum. Virginia has taken drawing and painting courses at the Hazleton Art League, Studio 303 in West Hazleton and Penn State Hazleton. She is part of Tim Weaver's Wednesday Painter group, a member of North Mountain Art League and a board member at the Hazleton Art League. She often depicts scenic landscapes and wildlife in acrylic or oil paint.Michael Delmonico is a photographer in the NEPA region specializing in portraiture and weddings. Over the last couple of years Michael has teamed up with many artists around the area to create collaborative pieces and environments for everyone who participates to throw themselves into their work and appreciate the process of making the pieces. His work can be found on delmonicophoto.com with his most recent work being posted to his Instagram @delmonicophoto weekly. Michael will be at the Hazleton Art League on Saturday, November 2nd with a photo booth to take portraits (with fall backdrops and props). Photos may be purchased for $5 and printed on site.
Greenleaf Gallery & Gift Shop

It showcases emerging artists and regularly exhibit new, themed shows 10 months a year. At other times it hosts music and educational talks. Guests are welcome to use have the art library on the premises. The Gallery also offers printing and framing options at reasonable prices and can produce art on commission. Owner Tamara Hersberger is excited to be hosting artists Mike Segilia and Christie Welch.Mike Segilia has been creating art in one form or another since he was a child. These days he mostly works with watercolors and sometimes acrylics. He loves painting seascapes, landscapes and portraits. Mike has done several consignment projects for people's pets or loved ones that have passed away. He also create works of special places specific to his clients and painting scenes of his own travels. He looks forward to having the public see his work.Christie Welch creates what she considers to be salvage art. She uses repurposed frames from thrift stores, as well as scrap aluminum as the sign base. She uses old license plates and other scrap items to create one of a kind pieces. No two are ever exactly the same. Since she works in the scrap metal industry the possibilities and resources are endless! Christie has been making signs for 7 years and thoroughly enjoys every creation.
Creative Voltage Mural
Address: Located to the rear of Hazle Drugs (7 N. Wyoming Street), Hazleton, PA 18201. Parking is available. The Creative Voltage Mural was completed in 2017 by Boston artist and Hazleton native Mary Veronica Sweeney with support from the Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. The mural depicts Thomas Edison, who in 1883 made Hazleton the third city in the world to have two-wire, three phase streetlights. Edison, together with the miners who extracted the coal to make electrification possible, helped make the City of Hazleton a center for business and culture well into the 20th-century. In this mural Edison transfers his creative energy to the children of the community.

She earned an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, an MA in Filmmaking studying with painter/director David Lynch, and an Ed.M from the Harvard Graduate School of Education researching the arts, technology and innovation in learning. Sweeney is an adjunct professor of art at Luzerne County Community College where she has taught mural arts and foundation courses in studio painting. Always eager to champion the rich talent of this area, of both young and seasoned, MV enjoys teaching traditional art practices while directing multiple public art projects, such as, the five-banner, full-colored “Hazleton Way” mural to be installed on the new Hayden Family Arts Center. The public is invited to stop in and view samples of Sweeney's work, as well as contribute a few brush strokes to the Hazleton Way mural, currently in progress.Sweeney’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and was featured in the 2006 traveling PA exhibition and book “Visions of the Susquehanna: 250 Years of Painting by American Masters”.

Future Hayden Family Center for the Arts

When complete in early 2020 the building will serve as the new Hayden Family Center for the Arts, which will be operated by the Hazleton Art League. The future CAN DO Community Park will also be renovated in the spring of 2020 to serve as a venue for special events. Together We Can Mural

On-street parking is available.The Together We Can Mural was completed by artist Jason Braun in partnership with Communities That Care (CTC) Youth Outreach Members in 2017. The story behind our mural begins with the Carrier Pigeon; a bird that represents the message of unity through hard work. Peace is depicted by the Dove with the olive branch. The unity theme is further strengthened by the diverse group of people working together to build our community. They are continuing to add onto the solid foundation left by our ancestors, block by block, working toward a common goal.The budding flower at the top of the pyramid indicates the growth that can be attained through the efforts of each person working together. The hands summarize the central message of the mural; With contributions from all of our citizens we can reach the TOP together.
Student -led Murals of HIP (Hazleton Integration Project)

Mural-making is an imaginative and attractive alternative to the written word, particularly for those who have difficulty articulating their experiences. HIP’s mural-making strategy seeks to authentically document the students’ perceptions and lived experiences. Three of the murals: 1) Under the Banyan Tree, 2) Joy of Belonging to HIP and Our Imagination are located in the cafeteria, and 3) Our HIP Game Board (in process), were all made by the students of the After-School Scholars Program. The fourth mural, 4) “Butterflies, Bugs, and Me” was made by the Junior muralists of HIP Summer Camp 2019. Gina Correll and a number of high school artist/ volunteers also assisted in the murals.Our HIP Summer Camp senior muralists under the direction of muralist Mary Veronica Sweeny created a whimsical, Joe Maddon Mural, located on the 2nd floor.Two additional Murals in the basement were done by recent graduates of the Hazleton Arts and Humanities Academy. A floral Mural was done by Mariluz Rodriquez and a Faeries Mural was done by Isabel Colon.On the first floor,(near the elevator), there is exquisite portrait of artist Freda Khalo done by local artist Alba Gisselle (Gigi) Perez . When the elevator doors open on the basement, there is a Diversity Mural capturing the words of Maya Angelou on the” beauty and strength of diversity.” This mural was designed by local artist Christina Galbiati with our older students from the Afterschool scholars Program.

He has exhibited his work in over 100 exhibitions worldwide. Visitors to the Mark Rooney Museum will be treated to a guided tour of 40 years of painting. Starting with his earliest "post-impressionist" paintings done in the mid 70's up to and including the work he is currently working on in his basement studio.

Students are encouraged to choose a subject that inspires them and develop their artwork and ability at their own pace, learning while doing. Getting involved in the arts is an engaging, fascinating, and fulfilling endeavor. It carves out a space of refuge in our lives that is personal, and intriguing, giving to others a gift of human expression that is mutually enriching.Studio owner and local artist, Jane Klesh Bucovsky, encourages everyone to make a space for the arts in their lives. The influence of these American impressionist artists has led her to focus on the light effect that encompasses the image. “We are all under the same Sun and Moon, day or night. It is always changing, interesting, and universal. It unites us over time and place. It is the beauty and visual interest of my time and place that I seek to reveal.”Her approach is the marriage of the personal and expressive power of drawing to the sensuality of paint. Subject matter includes Cityscape, Landscape, Figure, Portrait, and Still life.

Unique Jewelry by Barbara Knelly

Barbara Knelly has been working with glass for over 40 years. She started with stained glass and then moved to fusing jewelry. Barbara wire wraps each piece of glass with sterling silver or 14K gold filled wire to turn the piece into a work of art. She has been teaching fusing at the Hazleton Art League for over 15 years. Barbara also make earrings and bracelets to make a set.
