Future Site (TBD) of Mars Base Eagle - Community Designed NASA Mars Habitat
CALLING ALL MARTIANS - and Mars enthusiasts! Students, Teachers, Families, Experts - We need your help!Wings of Eagles Discovery Center (WEDC) is about to embark on a journey to bring a Human Habitat for Mars to the Center's collection of interactive science displays. Funded by a NASA museum grant, the project which runs from January 2017 - December 2018, will be closely tied to Elmira City School District and Greater Southern Tier BOCES required curricula. Experts from NASA Kennedy Space Center and NASA Johnson Space Center will work closely with the team at WEDC, local teachers, students and families to design an out-of-this-world habitat. Estimated installation for the exhibit is early 2018. Watch the museum website (www.wingsofeagles.com) for upcoming community meetings and listening sessions where the museum staff will be gathering input from area stakeholders on what science education and early learning resources our community needs at WEDC. The first community stakeholders informational meeting is Saturday, January 28, 2017, from 11am - 12pm. Admission is free if you are attending the meeting.
Mission Control Classroom
The NASA Mission Control classroom at Wings of Eagles Discovery Center is utilized to host area schools and special educational events. School groups can schedule an e-Learning program. e-Learning programs from Wings of Eagles Discovery Center are provided in the form of e-Missions through our relationship with Challenger Learning Center in Wheeling, WV. An e-Mission is a simulated group activity in which students act as the response team to a crisis and video conference with Mission Control to make recommendations to end the situation without any loss of life. Students are assigned to teams where they work together to solve problems using their background knowledge in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The e-Missions cover a range of subjects and are available for grade levels 3-12. Some classroom preparation is necessary before classes participate in a mission.
