#12 Peter Aldrich and Karen Melanson

#12 on the BrochureArtists showing at: 64-A Swamp Rd, Little Compton, RI 02837Peter AldrichAUGUST 17 & 18 OnlyOIL/CHARCOAL/ACRYLIC: Landscapes, portraits, still life and baseball scenespcaldrich@me.comhttps://www.peter-aldrich.com401-635-8816Perhaps more accurately, I paint what I think I see, or saw. I paint what I see. After an absence of over forty years, I came back to painting. My first lessons in drawing and oil painting really became lessons in seeing. I slowly realized that my businessman’s eyes had to become the eyes of a painter. Looking at the world through my new eyes is refreshing, and to me, surprising. Color, for instance, now presents to me a richer array of nuance and meaning. Shapes, planes, shadows, all have euclidean vibrancy to which I had previously been blind.I attempt in my painting to capture a moment in time, of my own vision, of the world as I see and feel it. If I am fortunate in a painting, I also manage to evoke for the viewer some feelings in turn. I strive for visual clarity that hopefully incorporates some subtle ambiguity of tone and mood. (I rarely achieve this.)I paint for myself. I have no message, nor mission. I love the endeavor, and the activity of painting. For me, it is a selfish endeavor. Time either stops, or whizzes by when I paint; I have yet to figure which. Suffice it to say that I loose the perception of time. The pleasure captures me completely. Only fatigue, frustration, or an obligation can bring me back to “real time”. I am pleased if others find pleasure in something I have rendered, but that is just a frosting pleasure.I paint quickly.A very long tree-lined driveway (quarter mile) brings you to the Aldrich "Barn" (big doors). PLEASE park in the field just behind the barn/studio. Thank you_____________Karen MelansonAUGUST 17 & 18 OnlyPASTEL: Colorful paintings of waves, seashore, marshes, flowers and sunsetskarenm133@gmail.comhttps://www.karenmelanson.comKaren loves to paint bright, vibrant, colorful pastels of the Southcoast. Living in Westport, she loves to capture the beauty and magic of the coastline, beaches, waves, marshes, sunsets and flowers in her paintings. #27 Galen V Snow

#27 on the BrochureArtist showing at: Galen V Snow, Fine Art 220 W. Main Rd, Little Compton, RI 02837Galen V SnowBOTH TOURSPAPER MONTAGE: Nature inspired paper paintings of flora, fauna and 'scapesgalenartist1@gmail.comhttps://www.gvsart.com401-499-3586Will provide ongoing demonstrations throughout the Tour weekend.Find us on Facebook and Instagram!Paper Montage (updated terminology for collage) has been Galen's medium for the past 11 years. It is an extremely time consuming process of which an 8 x 10 can take upwards of 60 hours to complete. She cuts and tears handmade papers, rice paper and imported fine papers to first layer the backgrounds of each piece with color. If she doesn't have the exact color paper she wants, she makes the color by gluing one color of paper over the other, creating the perfect hue in her minds eye, with a depth of transparency she's not seen with other mediums. She then use high quality, opaque and textural magazine pieces, each individually cut, to layer the subject (a bird or flower for example) on top of the background. She has found this gives a good sense of depth within the painting. The larger pieces, such as commissions and land/seascapes, can take months to complete; however, she does enjoy the larger format to achieve the perspectives needed to make the work feel as if one is standing right there. Many people think she uses paint to enhance her pieces, but, it is only paper and glue, or Paper Montage: 'Painting with Paper".Galen has given many demonstrations over the years. She loves to interact with the people who ask questions and watch her process in person. The layering of the papers is always the high point, as people see just how intense this process is! Over the past 13 years of the SCA Open Studio, she has always had ongoing 'demos' to both explain the layering process and why it takes so many hours to complete. The question usually gets asked: "Do you make your own paper", the answer is always a resounding "No! The process is lengthy enough!"The studio of gvsart is in the back of the main house, set back off the road. There will be signs directing you where to park. Please follow them!

A fiber artist who “paints with wool,” she creates impressionistic felted paintings inspired by nature. Primarily a landscape artist, she is inspired by the variation in landscape that the world around us offers. “I work in fiber because I am a maker; I enjoy the process and tactile experience involved with assembling to create while appreciating the forgiveness and immediacy that wool allows. Texture and tactile experience are important in my process.” Painting with fluffy bits of unspun colored wool involves a delicate and deliberate layering of color to capture light, texture, and depth in soft impressionistic scenes, incorporating an element of the unexpected. The results are traditional landscapes created in an unconventional way that invite a second look. Stephanie shows her work at regional art shows including the South Coast Artists Open Studio Tour. Recently, she was awarded Best in Show for her interpretation of Vincent Van Gogh’s “Wheat Field and Cypresses” at the annual Fakes and Forgeries exhibit at Spring Bull Gallery. Stephanie is a Custom Framing Designer at Riverside Art in Somerset Massachusetts and is currently the Membership Chair for South Coast Artists.Discover how fluffy bits of colored wool can be transformed into impressionistic landscapes. Stephanie will demonstrate how she paints with unspun wool by needle felting, mixing colors by carefully layering and creating texture and depth with color.
