#30 Gretchen Almy

#30 on the BrochureArtist showing at: Gretchen Almy Designs 1100 Horseneck Rd, Westport, MA 02790Gretchen AlmyBOTH TOURSOIL: Stimulating vivid landscapes and equestrian paintingsgalmydesigns@gmail.comhttps://www.galmydesigns.com508-889-2519Find us on Facebook and Instagram!Gretchen's work has been inspired by the equine form and nature’s beauty for the past 30 years.Having been influenced by some of the most well-known Abstract Expressionist painters she continues to push her own paintings of the horse and landscapes in this direction. Her love of vibrant, rich colors is evident in both subjects of her work. Ever evolving, she is excited with the process and enjoys the challenges with each new work she begins and the journey it takes her on never knowing exactly how each piece will be end up.Motivated by her time outdoors with horses and her dogs she is in awe of the dramatic combinations of colors and light that make up our natural surroundings. It’s mother nature’s drama that she attempts to encapsulate in her landscapes through her use of color, texture and minimal form. She has studied the equine form assiduously most of her life, from the saddle as well as the pasture and paddock. She has made a name for herself through commissions of horses and dogs with heightened realism and detail in oil and pencil. However, it's that connection to horses, that deep integrated part of her soul that continually inspires her work on a daily basis. The sheer size, energy, power, heart and deep soulful spirit of the horse, her muse, is what captivates her as an artist. She expresses this pure physical prowess and individual essence through strong lines, energetic brush strokes and color indicative of what they express in the ring or field. Her focus is to produce life size paintings expressing the sport horse’s heart and soul.Studio Space is located in the garage on the side of the house.

Cali enjoys the challenge of creating simple forms in clay, particularly vessels, platters, and tiles and then exploring more expressive surfaces. She plays with slips, glazes, resists, printing, pouring, and even finger painting to achieve results. Some of her work reveals recognizable images and patterns from the landscape while others are more abstracted. She hopes her work brings a sense of love and respect for place. Her pieces are intended for everyday use, and she uses food safe materials on all her work. This location will also showcase SCA sculptor, Whitmore Boogaerts both weekends. #36 Jade Donaldson

#36 on the BrochureArtist showing at: 615 Adamsville Rd., Westport, MA 02790Jade DonaldsonBOTH TOURSOIL/WATERCOLOR/CYANOTYPE: Landscapes and botanicals infused with nature’s magicjade.donaldson@gmail.comhttps://www.jadedonaldson.net/Find us on Instagram!Jade Donaldson is an interdisciplinary artist based in Little Compton. An alumna of the Brown-RISD Dual Degree program, she received a B.F.A. in Illustration (RISD) and a B.A. in Modern Culture and Media (Brown). She arrived in Little Compton in 2015, putting hands to work in cultivation of plants and design. The colors, textures, landscapes and forms she encounters in her daily vocation as a fine landscape gardener have significant presence in her work, and botanical subjects appear with frequency.Work with plants is shaped by powerful forces beyond human jurisdiction: the sun, rain, wind and activity of other living beings (some visible to the naked eye and some too miniscule to be gleaned by our scope of visual perception). This relinquishment of control and integration into the flow of all things is a fascinating challenge, and as necessary in the studio as it is in the garden. Just as in her horticultural work, Jade’s artistic practice involves attunement in observing, listening and responding to living energetic phenomena - some concrete and some mysterious. Long walks in the woods and on the beach are integral to her practice as sources of wonder, inspiration and mental clearing that allows for surprising gifts to be received. Recently, her work includes oil landscapes painted like portals inside of wooden boxes, botanical illustrations in varying media and cyanotypes using materials of the meadow - grasses, seedheads. Not constrained to any particular medium, Jade follows the work where it leads her, be it to drawing, painting, collage, photography, book-making and beyond.

#37 Penelope Finnie and Katherine Conkling Thompson

#37 on the BrochureArtists showing at: 783 Gifford Rd, Westport, MA 02790Penelope FinnieJULY 20 & 21 OnlyPAINT: Pastels, photography, watercolor, oil and encausticpenelopefinnie@icloud.com510-701-3472Find us on Instagram! As a younger painter, urban wastelands, done in an old master’s technique, was what Penelope Finnie painted. They had a De Chirico-esque quality about them. The time was the late 80’s and the decay of our industrial era was beginning, with all of the environmental implications beginning to be evident…beautiful but eerie. Fast forward 35 years and the effects of our past are definitely catching up with us. Moving to Westport full-time 3 years ago definitely changed Finnie’s work. It did become more about the natural world but always with an awareness that these resources are fragile and unbelievably amazing. She use pastels, photographs , watercolor, oil and possibly encaustic to create layers of reality.Exhibition is in the carriage house in the back. Katherine Conkling Thompson will be showing there as well.____________________Katherine Conkling ThompsonJULY 20 & 21 OnlyCLAY: Animal vessels, haiku moon jars and fruiting bodies candelabraskcthompson718@gmail.com917-912-8504Find us on Instagram!Katherine Conkling Thompson makes ceramic vessels to hold thoughts, hopes or flowers. In 2023 Thompson began making a series of “Animal Vessels” honoring the creatures that live amongst us here in the South Coast of New England. Her deer, coyotes, owls, and crows have an iconic presence in their sculpted simplicity. They evolved out of Thompson’s series of “Bust Vases.” These unembellished human form vessels communicate through gesture, our unspoken and, often subconscious, physical language and subtly become imbued with an undercurrent of quiet emotion. They love to be dressed up with a seasonal headdress of flowers or branches. Thompson’s “Haiku Moon Jars”, inspired by the Korean moon jar tradition, are hand built and so are somewhat irregular, cratered, and are embossed with original haiku poems reflecting on the moon’s power, creatures of the night or humanity’s shy devotion to our silent orb. Pile them up and they become a totem. Thompson’s “Fruiting Bodies” candelabras are organic in form and inspired by the buried life force of fungi and their amazing communication networks which knit together ecosystems. The candles illuminate within the organism and in the fruiting “flowers.” She also hand-builds ceramic tableware, bowls, cups, and candlesticks.Katherine Conkling Thompson works and lives in Brooklyn, New York and Westport, Massachusetts. She grew up in Boston but came of age in New Orleans where she went to Tulane and studied English and Fine Arts. Katherine is inspired by the nature in her midst along the shoreline of Brooklyn’s East River, Westport River’s marshes or the rocky points in Maine where she spent her childhood summers. When she’s not in the studio, you can find her gardening in her local Brooklyn park, working with others fighting against climate change or sailing around Buzzard's Bay with her husband, Dewey, on their boat Harmony.Art show is in the carriage house in the back.It is at the studio of artist Penelope Finnie.

#40 Catherine D Hafer

#40 on the BrochureArtist showing at: Catherine D. Hafer Studios 73 Union Ave, Westport, MA 02790Catherine D HaferJULY 20 & 21 OnlyOIL/CHARCOAL: Capturing personality and bringing feeling to lifehaferstudios@verizon.nethttps://www.haferstudios.com/774-320-5010Will provide ongoing demonstrations throughout the Tour weekend.Find us on Facebook and Instagram!“Capturing Personality and Bringing Feeling to Life”Everything in Hafer's pieces, from composition, pose, placement of the subject, the colors, to technique is specifically selected to capture a feeling and/or personality. In order to do that, she has to dig deep below the surface and go beyond what you see on the outside. To do this, Hafer accesses a way of seeing, or insight into truths. When painting a Portrait, these insights allow her to identify the main attitude of the personality and the main feelings motivating the individual. She is then able to determine the best pose, colors, etc., to bring out who/what the subject is on the inside. This enables her to paint who they really are, not just their outer shell. There is far more inside than we could ever see with the physical eye.Capturing feeling is the same. What color, pose, composition, etc., is needed to capture the feeling that she is trying to convey? When capturing feeling in a work, all colors represent feeling, and most times she will change and/or alter colors to help capture it. In all of Hafer's work, she is attempting to capture feeling, not just what she sees. Hafer examines what it is that she felt that made her want to paint something, and how to best convey that feeling.Catherine will be working on either a painting or drawing during the tour. You can observe her working on a piece in progress.A note to anyone that has come to my studio before...Please be aware that I am in a new location.

#42 Thomas A Leverett

#42 on the BrochureArtist showing at: TleverettArt 21 Raymond St, Westport, MA 02790Thomas A Leverett BOTH TOURSOIL/ACRYLIC/WATER/PASTEL/CHARCOAL: Vibrant seascapes, landscapes, sunsets, animals and peopletleverettart@gmail.com774-328-2442I am willing to provide ongoing demonstrations throughout the Tour weekend.Find us on Instagram! So when I get ready to paint on canvas I select a heavy duty professional grade gallery wrapped canvas. First thing I do is inspect canvas for any imperfections. Before I get started I put a few coats of gesso and sand between coats. It dries hard and makes the surface more stiff. Without Gesso the paint would soak right into the canvas. So if I'm working on a seascape and there is a sunset scenery planned I do a undercoat. On this painting I mix some Quinacridone Red and some Pyrrole Orange on the palette. I'll spray some water on the canvas and spread the under coat of paint. Acrylic paint dries pretty quick. Next I measure 3/4 the way up on canvas with a charcoal pencil. Use the T-square and draw a line across at that point. I attach a good painters tape across canvas at line. Now I'm ready for the sky. I have a Manganese Blue and Titanium White. I wet a 1-1/2" brush with flow aid additive added to the water. Make a pass with the color Manganese blue . Then I start mixing Titanium white a little at the time until I reach the tape line blending them all in together. Clouds next using a fan brush or sponge. Sometimes I use the bottom of a bigger brush. I prefer the fan brush. With Titanium spin brush and move forward. Add grays . Take a dry brush and move things around. Go back and brighten edges. When everything is dry remove the tape. This is just about the sky.Ok if the weather is nice for the Tour I will set up my demo outside. I will show what canvas I use, Talk about the gesso, Types of paint I use, How I use them And about the procedures as I paint.I move my paintings downstairs for the open studio Tour. A bigger room to move around. Set up a canopy outside with table to sit down with refreshments. Follow signs at the corner of Briggs and Rt. 88 or Sanford Road and Briggs leading to 21 Raymond Street in Westport, MA. 02790. Signs lead right up to my Driveway right side of Raymond St.

#44 Kitt Shaffer and Kris Shaffer

#44 on the BrochureArtists showing at: ShafferArts 1 Monument Dr, Westport, MA 02790Kitt ShafferBOTH TOURSCERAMICS/PASTEL: Local and distant landscapes and ceramicswestportshafferarts@gmail.comhttp://www.shafferarts.com617-312-1543Will provide ongoing demonstrations throughout the Tour weekend.Kitt Shaffer explores landscapes in oil, pastel and ceramics, as well as painted furniture. Her ceramics include whimsical masks, finials, and sculptural pieces as well as functional wheel-thrown and hand-built works. Her white line prints include whaling themes and local scenery. She also draws and paints the figure in bright colors and various media.White line printing is a simple and inexpensive method for printing that involves application of watercolor to the non-carved portion of a wood block. Outlines of areas to be colored are carved, producing a white line on the final print. No printing press is needed, as the paper is thumb-tacked to the wood block, and after a small area of color has been painted onto the block, the paper is pressed down (with a spoon) to absorb the color. This allows for endless adjustments of the print as it evolves. The block can then be washed and used again, with the same or different colors.During Open Studios, various stages of white line printing will be ongoing, with examples of completed prints and blocks. At some points, carving will be shown, and at others, the process of printing, which can be done in a leisurely fashion. Demonstrations will be ongoing from 1:00-4:00, with occasional breaks, but at other times, there will be examples of prints at various stages to view and someone to answer questions.Restroom is accessible indoors and ceramics will be displayed outdoors, weather permitting._____________________Kris ShafferBOTH TOURSOIL/PASTEL/WATERCOLOR: Vibrant landscapes of urban and rural scenes, lively portraitskris@krissshaffer.comhttp://www.krisshaffer.com617-610-0657Originally from Kansas, after many years in the Northeast Kris Shaffer now considers the Boston area home. She transferred from Kansas State University to Massachusetts College of Art where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting. After college, she moved to Tesuque, New Mexico where she fell in love with landscape painting. The magical light of the high plains desert was fantastic, and reminiscent of the stunning Flint Hills of Kansas. Her next stop was San Francisco where she married and had two sons. The family returned to Boston and became her focus while maintaining an active painting studio. During this time, her passion for art was also expressed through a flourishing interior design business. Urban landscapes have always been a favorite subject, but harsh weather and demands of life lead her to an ongoing series of book paintings. Being able to stack, arrange and light books in the studio provided many elements reminiscent of urban scenery that were utterly controllable. With her sons now adults, painting has once again taken center stage, with landscapes remaining one of her favorite subjects. Bales of hay are seen as sleeping giants that could come to life at any time and meander away. Cows are also a favorite subject. Roads leading to nowhere, to anywhere, to everywhere provide endless fascination. She has recently expanded her work to oil pastels and portraiture. The human face, or any face is so expressive. Figure drawing was her first love, but she never explored portraits until recently. Oil pastels brought her to watercolors and the immediacy and non-toxic nature this medium is attractive. Changing mediums has challenged her to see things in new ways adding depth and understanding to her work. She continues to explore varied methods of capturing the beauty of everyday objects. There is no street sign for Monument Drive, which is about 1.5 miles west on Adamsville from Main Road, Westport, on the left. The studio entrance is about 400 feet from Adamsville road on the left, with a white shell driveway, and parking available along Monument Drive or in the driveway parking area. There is a restroom available up about six steps from the yard.

#45 Donna St Amant and Stan Frankenthaler

#45 on the BrochureArtists showing at: 2 Fox Ln, Westport, MA 02790Donna St AmantBOTH TOURSPHOTOGRAPHY: Vibrant and detailed images created on a flat bed scannerDonna@donnastamant.comhttps://www.donnastamant.com508-207-6645Find us on Facebook and Instagram!Donna’s love of capturing images began back in the early ‘80s with black and white film and her own darkroom where she marveled at the development process. When the digital era began replacing film and supplies became more difficult to find, she stepped away as the extensive time on the computer required in that new format was too close to how she spent most of her workday as an engineer. She sought out more tangible ways to express herself and found working with metal, flame, and hammer as a metalsmith gave her the perfect balance and at times a way to relieve the stresses of day.Now in retirement, she’s rekindled her love of photography. She capture the close up detail and beauty of flowers, worn beached objects, and elements of nature that cross her path on a large flatbed scanner in a process often called “Scanography”. Once used to digitize her photographic negatives, the high-resolution scanner is now her ‘studio camera’ and the fine detail it captures never ceases to amaze her. Whether a single bloom or a ‘medley’ of treasures, the objects are placed directly on the scanner glass with the cover left open. She builds depth and layers from foreground to background on the glass surface. Using a preview feature, she can see the image as it will be recorded and can rearrange elements until it’s just what she had imagined. To Donna, this process feels somewhat like organizing a group portrait. She place the individuals near one another in a pleasing and cohesive composition, intertwines outreaching elements to project a feeling of connection, and then captures the moment.Overall, she says “It’s all about passion, the joy of creating … and the continuous quest to learn and grow.”Yellow house on a dirt lane off of Drift Road.____________Stan FrankenthalerBOTH TOURSWATERCOLOR/ENCAUSTIC: Abstract paintings, bricolage and monoprints inspired by naturestan@stanfrankenthaler.comhttps://www.stanfrankenthaler.com339-237-1622Will provide ongoing demonstrations throughout the Tour weekend.Find us on Instagram!Stan Frankenthaler is a working abstract artist; and chef. Living on the south coast of Massachusetts he finds great joy and inspiration all around him. “I love to be absorbed in my surroundings. I seek to find the beauty in all places. As simple as a walk in the woods, or along the beach; I take joy from the spirit of place and try to share something of those experiences through my artwork (and cooking).”Frankenthaler grew up in a family rich in tradition, and steeped in pursuing the American dream of “follow your path, work hard, make your own way”. Primarily growing up in the south, Stan spent time with both branches of his family - from New York City to rural Alabama. This breadth of cultural exposure greatly influenced Frankenthaler – from a young age he was taken to Broadway shows, museums, and white-tablecloth restaurants; as well as taught to cook, fish, shell peas, and rewire a lamp! After starting watercolor classes in 2007. Frankenthaler continued working in various mediums; finding plenty of inspiration living in a coastal, farming town; and Colorado. ”As a teen and younger adult, I found expression in writing, cooking, and photography …. Which I still enjoy, yet when I first experienced working in encaustic it just felt such a natural fit that I have focused building my skills and exploring my voice with wax more than any other medium.” Using gathered and pressed botanicals along with other found materials, Frankenthaler creates encaustic bricolage; building subject and story through layering and fusing these with beeswax, pigments and other materials. His mono-prints are painted directly on his griddle, and lifted on various papers. “I’m pulled to the physicality, heat and fire of the encaustic process. And through this find the narrative I hope to share.”Stan will demonstrate his techniques for making his encaustic monoprints. He paints directly on his hot griddle with pigmented beeswax and then using various tools and his hands works the image to a point where he is then ready to catch it on paper. Frankenthaler may further work the image once the paper has been laid onto the griddle before he lifts it hot off the griddle.
